During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited Goundam, the chief town of the picturesque region of Lake Faguibine. its population consists of Tuareg and Maure nomads, Songhay farmers and some Bozo fishermen. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.

Original title reads, "Roll on workers carrying bags of groundnuts or peanuts up side of a nascent pyramid, on the premises of P.S. Mandrides &Co, Ltd, Kano. Mandrides' oil mill is one of the largest in Nigeria. The workers are almost all Hausa, they are paid from 7 to 10 shillings a day. The bags contain shelled peanuts." Original title reads, "Polling agents getting instructions for Dec. 12 federal elections from Robert N. Rapson, M.V.O., a senior assistant secretary in the office of the prime minister, who was assigned as electoral officer for Lagos. All the polling agents at the 283 polling stations in Lagos were employes of the government or of public corporations. Lagos elected three of the 312 members of the federal house of representatives." Original title reads, "Roll on workers carrying bags of groundnuts or peanuts up side of a nascent pyramid, on the premises of P.S. Mandrides &Co, Ltd, Kano. Mandrides' oil mill is one of the largest in Nigeria. The workers are almost all Hausa, they are paid from 7 to 10 shillings a day. The bags contain shelled peanuts." Original title reads, "Polling agents getting instructions for Dec. 12 federal elections from Robert N. Rapson, M.V.O., a senior assistant secretary in the office of the prime minister, who was assigned as electoral officer for Lagos. All the polling agents at the 283 polling stations in Lagos were employes of the government or of public corporations. Lagos elected three of the 312 members of the federal house of representatives."
