Biographical / Historical:
Trudy Sween (1929-2017) was known primarily as a painter, but was also a sculptor and a published poet based in Houston, Texas.

Sween studied at the University of Houston and often exhibited her works in Texas. She was a founder of the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and served on its executive board for many years.
Provenance:
Trudy Sween donated portions of her papers to the Archives of American Art in 1982-1983.

REEL 1079: 34 letters from Charles Burchfield and 6 letters from Henry Varnum Poor to Beal.
Biographical / Historical:
Art historian, patron; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jacob Eichholtz was a 19th century painter. Beal is his great granddaughter. She wrote a book about him, JACOB EICHHOLTZ, 1776-1842: PORTRAIT PAINTER OF PENNSYLVANIA, published in 1969.

Model speaks of early mentors and friendships with sculptor Moissey Kogan, author Herman Hesse, art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, and others. She recalls visits with artists and collectors, including Aristide Maillol, Charles Despiau, Jacob Epstein, and Jean Paul Getty. She also describes several events, such as the Han van Meegeren art forgeries, her family's escape to New York during WW II, and her career successes.

Biographical / Historical:
Jeanet Steckler Dreskin (1921- ) is a painter, illustrator, and arts administrator active in South Carolina. She studied at Sophie Newcomb College and later at Johns Hopkins University. In the 1960s, Dreskin was named head of the Greenville County Museum School of Art in Greenville, South Carolina.
Separated Materials:
Printed material emanating from a Dreskin exhibition at the Greenville County Museum of Art, January 1970, was microfilmed on reels N70-25, N69-23 and transferred to the vertical files of Smithsonian's American Art Museum. This material is not described in the collection container inventory.

REEL 2714: Photographs, 1886-1977, of Norman, her family and friends, and her residences at Peaslake, Surrey, England, and Old Lyme, Conn.
UNMICROFILMED: Diaries, 1891-1892, 1908-1910, 1913-1915, and 1917-1920; a baptismal certificate, marriage certificate, notes on family relationships, a certificate for the Theosopical Society, a resume, lists of paintings, and address books; diaries of Norman's eldest son Geoffrey, 1913-1915, and of her friend Adah Stuart Franks, kept while Norman was living with her in England, 1904-1911; letters from family, friends, and business associates, 1904-1935, including many from British architects, sculptors, and others involved in the Arts and Crafts movement, from patrons such as William H. Clarke, Winefred Douglas, Mrs. John Sherman Hoyt, and from other notable figures such as Mabel Dodge, Helen Mears, and Alfred Stieglitz; autobiographical writings; drafts for articles on mural decoration and manuscript illumination, notes for lectures, articles on art and literature, drafts of short stories, and notebooks containing writings, notes and addresses.
Also included are a few sketches, pen and ink illustrations for Norman's short story "Pipkin," an illuminated calendar, and cover decorations and lettering for a book by Norman; business records, including price lists, expense, budget, and cash books and other financial records; subject files on projects or art works; a scrapbook, 1914; an interview of Clive Maxwell Norman, Norman's son, April 28, 1980, about his mother; and printed materials.
Letters, legal documents, clippings and other material relating to Norman's separation trial and divorce from John Thomas Norman, 1905-1929, complete the collection.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter and illuminator; Surrey, England and Old Lyme, Conn. Born Belle Elkin Mitchell in Kansas. Lived in England, ca. 1884-1913, and was attracted to the Arts and Crafts Movement, especially to murals and illuminated manuscripts. Among her closest friends were the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore and the illustrator Walter Crane. Following a sensational divorce trial in 1914, in which her counsel was Lloyd-George, she returned to America, and worked on private commissions and exhibitions, chiefly in New York, Old Lyme, and Michigan.

The papers of painter and gallery owner Elenore Lust measure 0.9 linear feet and date from circa 1940 to 1991, with the bulk of the material dating from 1943-1949. Four scrapbooks containing letters, photographs and printed material, annotated by Lust, document her career as a painter, teacher, and owner of the Norlyst Gallery. Also found are items related to Piet Mondrian, including two letters from Mondrian to Lust.

Biographical / Historical:
Elenore Lust (1909-1997) was an art dealer, gallery owner, and painter in New York City, New York and Mount Holly, New Jersey. Lust studied painting at the Art Students League and opened the Norlyst Gallery at 59 West 56th Street, New York, in partnership with Jimmy Ernst in March 1943. Ernst left the business after several years and Lust continued to operate the gallery until 1949, when she closed its doors to pursue other interests. Lust later opened the Norlist (new spelling) Art Studio in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

Biographical / Historical:
Painter, instructor; Paris, Kentucky and Paris, France. Hill studied and lived in Paris, knew Rosa Bonheur and painted in the Barbizon. She did a series of portraits of Bourbon County, Ky. judges, and taught china painting as well. She lived in Paris, Ky. from 1900 until her death.
Provenance:
The lender, William Dudley, is the great-nephew of the artist.

Biographical / Historical:
Painters, designers; Santa Fe, N.M. Wilfred Stedman was trained as an architect, and did freelance work as an illustrator, including WPA projects in New Mexico. The Stedmans often collaborated in designing, building, and remodeling New Mexican adobe houses, in addition to their separate painting projects.

Biographical / Historical:
Miniature painter; Cornish, N.H. Studied under Henry Siddons Mowbray and William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in NYC. Married Henry B. Fuller in 1893. In 1899, she was one of the founders of the American Society of Miniature Painters. Was stricken with multiple sclerosis. Summered at the art colony in Cornish, N.H.

An interview of Margaret Burroughs conducted 1988 November 11-December 5, by Anna Tyler, for the Archives of American Art African American artists in Chicago oral history project (1988-1989).
Discussion ranges from her childhood and early artistic training through her current activities. She reminisces about her experiences as a student at the School of the Chicago Art Institute, the arts in Chicago in the 1930s, the Grant Park Art Fair and the South Side Community Art Center. Other topics include World War II and the McCarthy era, her sabbatical in Mexico, the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Emancipation Centennial Exposition and the Afro-American Visual Roundtable.

The microfilmed Katharine Livingston Bayard Johnson papers contain correspondence, photographs, sketches, a scrapbook, and printed material. Much of the collection is material sent to family members in the United States from Johnson in France. A family genealogy was compiled by Robert Bayard Severy, Johnson's great-nephew.

Microfilmed on Reels 573-577 are correspondence; 11 sketchbooks; records of books read by Johnson; and miscellany, including a genealogy of the Bayard family prepared by Robert Severy (1976). Materials microfilmed on Reels 1079-1080 include one letter from Johnson to William Bellamy (1891), and a scrapbook collected by Johnson containing sketches by Anna Cabot Lowell Quincy; etchings by A.W. Warren; pressed flowers; and photographs, including several tintypes (circa 1868-1874) of Johnson, friends and relatives. Microfilmed on Reel 3471 are a photograph of a self-portrait of Johnson and an exhibition catalog (1898).

Katharine Livingston Bayard Johnson (1845-1906) was a painter in Paris, France. Born in the Massachusetts, Johnson lived in Europe for most of her life. Her sister was Anna M. Johnson Bellamy.
