Correspondence sent on behalf of the W. Atlee Burpee Co. The bulk of this material was authored by W. Atlee Burpee or high-level staff members. Most of the files were originally housed chronologically and/or alphabetically in cardboard transfer cases labeled "W. A. Burpee Correspondence," and included both original and carbon copies of receipts, contracts, order inquiries, trade literature, general correspondence, notebooks, and photographs. Correspondents include customers from all over the world, contractors, seed companies, Burpee staff, high-ranking government officials and other "notables," and various outside organizations.
After the 'transfer case' phase of file management (ca. 1890-1920), the firm's record keeping system transitioned to one where topical files were created for individual subjects, individuals, etc. For additional company correspondence and other files related to the running of the company, see W. Atlee and David Burpee's personnel papers in Series 2.2 Administrative Records/Personnel.
