The papers of John Joseph Honigmann (1914-1977) consist largely of research material of a specialist in personality, socialization, and social problems of Subarctic and Arctic people. Trained at Yale University (M.A., 1943; Ph.D., 1947), Honigmann spent most of his professional career at the University of North Carolina (1951-77) and was chairman of its Department of Anthropology from 1970-1975. Some material reflects his classroom teaching and administrative work. There are also general reference materials and materials relating to the history of anthropology.

Biographical / Historical:
Honigmann was regularly in the field. In 1943, this began with an ethnographic study of the Fort Nelson Slave in Canada. In 1944-1945, he was with the Kaska in British Columbia. In 1947-1948, he worked at Attawapiskat on James Bay and, in 1949-1950, at Great Whale River on Hudson Bay. He investigated town life in Pakistan in 1952 and 1957-1958. During the summers of 1960-1962, 1964-1966, 1972, and 1975, his studies carried him to a village in Austria. In 1963, he worked at Frobisher Bay and in 1967 at Inuvik.

The records of the American Ethnological Society (AES) document its activities from its founding in 1842 through the mid-1960s. The American Ethnological Society is the oldest anthropological association in America. It has been interested in publishing and promoting study of different cultures in the Americas from its founding in 1842 to the present. Materials include correspondence, reports, and financial records relating to the administrative functions of the organization.
Scope and Contents:
The records of the American Ethnological Society (AES) document its activities from its founding in 1842 through the mid-1960s.
The early years of the AES (1840s to 1880) are documented through correspondence, newspaper clippings, and proceedings. The bulk of the collection relates to the administrative functions of the AES from its reorganization in 1906 through 1965 including changes to the constitution and the elections of officers. The offices of Secretary-Treasurer and Editor are well documented through correspondence and reports. There is also a significant amount of correspondence to and from members, financial records, and information on the AES‟ interactions with other organizations such as the American Anthropological Association and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Historical Note:
The American Ethnological Society is the oldest anthropological association in America. It has been interested in publishing and promoting study of different cultures in the Americas from its founding in 1842 to the present.
The American Ethnological Society was founded in 1842 by Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson and founder of New York University. Early members were doctors, lawyers, businessmen and included Henry Schoolcraft, William Prescott and Theodore Dwight. Meetings were usually held at the home of the President and accounts of missionaries and explorers, who were "corresponding" members, were read. Local papers frequently covered these meetings. The Society published three periodicals in its early years including Transactions which first appeared in 1845. Interest in the Society declined after the Civil War. In 1906 a group of professional anthropologists led by Franz Boas joined the Society and reorganized it, adding the Office of Editor. Since then, the Society has been very active and has had a strong publications program, beginning with a linguistic series begun by Franz Boas. The Society holds annual meetings, usually in the spring at which prominent anthropologists present their findings. In addition to Franz Boas, the Society has included among its members such famous anthropologists as Ruth Benedict, E. Adamson Hoebel, Margaret Mead and Ward Goodenough.
Provenance:
The treasurer's records dating from 1916 to 1924 were transferred to the archives by the American Museum of Natural History. All other records came to the archives from the American Ethnological Society.

Included in this collection are field diaries, numerous manuscripts and lectures, research materials, correspondence, sound recordings and ethnographic photographs. Also included are various subject and index files maintained by Thompson for her many research projects. The collection is particularly rich in unpublished manuscripts that Thompson created from 1950 to the mid 1990s. Manuscript topics include particular field sites, such as Fiji and West Germany, as well as Thompson's critical and theoretical exposition regarding the future of applied anthropology, variously titled "Clinical" and "Holistic Anthropology."
Numerous materials pertaining to Thompson's personal life are also located in the collection, including personal diaries and professional awards, correspondence with friends and family, and personal photographs of Thompson from infancy to old age. Located in Thompson's personal papers are her writings from late in life, in which she addressed aging through her anthropological sensibilities, recorded formative memories from her youth, and projected the future of a world rife with injustice and environmental destruction.
A large portion of the Laura Thompson papers include documents from the Indian Personality, Education and Administration (IPEA) Project, initiated by the Office of Indian Affairs and the University of Chicago Committee on Human Development. This investigation of five Native American tribes includes the results of over 1000 psychological studies of native children. Materials included encompass the protocols for and implementation of the project, as well as field reports, psychological tests, correspondence, worker supervision reports and final analyses of findings. Included is a copy of the project's published final report, Personality and Government (1951). The bulk of the records date between 1941and 47; related material spans as late as 1992. Correspondents primarily include project members and consultants, particularly: John Collier, A. I. Hallowell, Maud Hallowell, Royal Hassrick, Robert Havinghurst, Alice Joseph, Bruno Klopfer, Clyde Kluckhohn, Dorothea Leighton, D'Arcy McNickle, Trude Schmidl-Waehner, Heinrich Schultz, Ruth Underhill, and W. Biographical Note:
Laura Thompson (1905-2000) conducted fieldwork in Oceania, the Southwestern United States and Europe; she taught at numerous institutions and served as a consultant for many organizations, including the Naval Government of Guam and the Office of Indian Affairs, throughout her career. Thompson's papers reflect her involvement in each of these activities as well as her desire to formulate a unifying theory of applied anthropology that would address issues including environmentalism and overpopulation.

Invited by the island's Naval governor to evaluate the local educational sysytem, Laura Thompson first conducted field research in Guam from 1938 to 1939. This study resulted in the publication of Guam and its People (1947). During her stay in Guam, Thompson also traveled to Asia; letters and materials from this trip are located in this series. Thompson maintained her interest in Guam, its administrative problems, and particularly the plights of the Chamorro people. She returned to the island a number of times in her career, including in 1977 and 1987, and maintained personal and professional relationships with colleagues and informants. Professional correspondence is both ingoing and outgoing; personal correspondence is almost entirely composed by Thompson. Correspondents include Thompson's family, colleagues, informants and Guamanian government officials. Thompson's letters to her family during her first trip to the field were later annotated for inclusion in a projected volume of letters from the field. Correspondents Becky Stephenson and her husband, Hiro Kurashina, were close friends as well as colleagues of Thompson's. They became Thompson's literary executors in the mid 1990s and some correspondence between Stephenson and Thompson relates to the publication of Thompson's autobiography, Beyond the Dream. Thompson's field studies include her itinerary, field notes, and an index to her field diary from 1938 and 1939, as well as notes she collected during her trip to the Orient. Few materials in the collection relate to Thompson's seminal work, Guam and Its People.

These materials encompass Thompson's consulting work and participation in conferences for the Institute of Human Values. Thompson served as a member of the advisory board for the Institute and participated in all four meetings held by the organization (1976 to 1978 and 1981). The bulk of correspondence in the series is with John R. MacCormack, Director of the Institute. Also included are papers delivered at conferences and those published in Humanitas, the journal in which the Institute published its conference proceedings.

Between 1934 and 1937, Thompson lived in Germany with her husband, Bernhard Tuting, and his family. After returning to the United States in 1938, Thompson delivered lectures about life in Nazi Germany which are included in this series. Correspondence during this period includes letters from Thompson to her family; few outgoing letters are included. Annotations in pencil on these letters were added at a later date when Thompson edited the material for an intended book based upon her personal letters sent from the field. Manuscript versions of "Letters from Germany" are included with Thompson's Germany manuscripts. Original letters between 1934 and 1935 are absent from the collection. Thompson maintained her interest in German culture throughout her professional life. In 1952 and again in 1960, she returned to Germany to conduct the research which formed the basis for her book-length manuscript about Saxon values. Drafts for the book are filed alphabetically under the heading, "Saxony core values." Related values manuscripts may be found in Series 7. Manuscripts in this series also include papers that Thompson wrote in the 1940s but later edited and may have submitted for the Human Relations Area Files. Notes in this series include index reference files as well as research materials.
