General Correspondence

Collection Creator:
Page, William, 1811-1885  Search this
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1815-1942, undated
Scope and Contents note:
Letters in this series include the personal and professional correspondence of William Page, his wife, Sophia Candace Stevens Page, and their families, as well as correspondence of Sophia Page's first husband Stephen Hitchcock and his family.

William Page's correspondence is found from 1833 to 1885 only, with the bulk of his correspondence dating from 1852 to 1877. Drafts of outgoing letters written by William and Sophia Page are found throughout the series. Correspondence is arranged chronologically, with undated correspondence filed alphabetically by author at the end of the series. Correspondence of Page's children, which is voluminous from the early 1880s onward, and other family correspondence of the Page, Stevens, and Hitchcock families has not been indexed.

The earliest correspondence is that of Page's relatives of the Mathies, Dunnel, and Baldwin families of New York State. From 1840 through 1852, much of the correspondence is that of the Hitchcock family. See Series 2.3 for correspondence between Sophia and Steven Hitchcock. Love letters between William Page and Sophia (then Hitchcock) are prevalent in 1857, the year they were married. Family correspondence among Sophia Page, her parents, and her brothers Henry, B. Frank, and Simon Stevens is prevalent from the 1850s through the 1880s. By 1884, much of the correspondence is that of the Page children, including their personal, business, and family correspondence. A long, amorous correspondence from Charlotte "Sharly" Briggs to Candace "Dacie" Page, which documents an apparently intimate relationship between the two women, is found from the late 1880s onward, with many undated letters.

William Page's significant correspondents include artists such as Thomas Hicks, Enoch Wood Perry, William Stark, Theodore Tilton, and Lemuel Wilmarth; patrons Wendell Phillips, J. Hopper, William Walker Scranton, and Francis G. Shaw; writers James Russell Lowell, Charles Frederick Briggs (see also Series 2.2), George W. Curtis, and the actress Charlotte Cushman. An unusually lengthy letter from Page to a young artist "W" (possibly William Stark) about painting is dated 1860. Sophia Page's correspondents include Thomas K. Beecher, Mary Olmsted and Bertha Olmsted.

See Appendix for a list of selected correspondents from Series 2.1.
Appendix: Selected Correspondents from Series 2.1.:
The following is a selective list of correspondence of William and Sophia Page in Series 2.1: General Correspondence.

Spellings and abbreviations of names below reflect the actual signatures of letters. Names preceded by question marks indicate partially-legible signatures. Letters with unsigned and illegible signatures which could not be indexed are common in the correspondence, so this index should not be considered comprehensive.

Biographical Note:
Jervis McEntee was born in Rondout, New York, July 14, 1828. He had early literary and artistic aspirations and studied under Frederic E. Church, who had himself studied under the Hudson River School master, Thomas Cole. McEntee was to maintain a close relationship with Church for the rest of his life. After an unsuccessful stint as a businessman, McEntee settled in New York in 1857 as one of the charter residents of Richard Morris Hunt's Tenth Street Studio Building. Since many of the other occupants were either bachelors or commuters, and since Mrs. McEntee was a lively, sympathetic hostess, the couple became the center of a spontaneous salon frequented by some of the best-known artists, writers, and actors of the time. After his wife died in 1878, McEntee stayed on, an increasingly neglected widower until his death in 1891.

McEntee was identified with the Hudson River School and an accomplished and sensitive painter of autumnal landscapes. He wrote in 1874, "Perhaps what would mark my work among that of my brother artists is a preference for the soberer phases Nature, the gray days of November and its leafless trees." McEntee stood at the center of the interlocking directorate formed by the National Academy of Design, the Century Club, and the Tenth Street Studio Building. In the latter part of the 19th century, these formed a supreme art establishment whose membership was composed of the old guard American artists, such as McEntee's close friends Eastman Johnson, Sanford Gifford, John Ferguson Weir, Worthington Whittredge, and Church, who were fighting an ultimately futile battle against the encroachment of European influences among both artists and collectors.

The Archives of American Art also holds material lent for microfilming (reel D9) including a diary dated June 12, 1851-August 17, 1851. This material was returned to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York and is not described in the collection container inventory.
Provenance:
The Adirondack Museum lent one diary for microfilming in 1964. The rest of the collection was acquired from several donors between 1959 and 1997. The noted collector Charles E. Feinberg donated letters in 1959 and, Mrs. Helen S. McEntee, who married the nephew of Jervis McEntee, donated the five volumes of diaries in 1964. William Gaffken, director of the insurance company that acquired the McEntee family insurance business, donated the remaining papers in 1997.
Restrictions:
Use of original papers requires and appointment and is limited to the Archives' Washington, D.C., Research Center.
Rights:

Diaries

Collection Creator:
Smillie Family  Search this
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1865-1909
Scope and Contents note:
There are forty-five volumes of daily diaries in which Smillie describes his paintings, drawings and prints, and references over 200 artists with whom he was acquainted. Loose items originally filed within the diaries include letters, notes, sketches, a silhouette, calling cards, receipts, printed material, and a photo of Smillie, among many other items.

See Appendix for a list of artists mentioned in the diaries from Series 1.3.
Arrangement note:
This subseries is arranged in chronological order with materials tucked into diaries at the end of the subseries and arranged by type. The loose items had been removed from the diaries at an earlier time, most likely upon microfilming, and it is not clear in which diary they were originally filed.

Correspondence

Collection Creator:
Vedder, Elihu, 1836-1923  Search this
Extent:
(Boxes 2-5; 3.6 linear feet)
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1804-1951
Scope and Contents note:
Series consists of Vedder's personal, professional, and family correspondence, comprised mostly of incoming letters as well as some copies or drafts of outgoing letters. Correspondents include family, friends, artists, dealers, collectors, admirers, and publishers. The bulk of the business correspondence was written by Caroline R. Vedder on behalf of her husband, including correspondence with collectors, people who commissioned work, dealers, and publishers.

Earliest correspondence consists of letters sent and received by various members of Vedder's immediate and extended family, including his parents, Elizabeth and Elihu Vedder, Sr., his brother, Alexander V., his maternal grandparents, Alexander and Agnes Vedder, his maternal aunt, Eveline Caister, and his paternal uncles, Levi and John Vedder. Early letters document the time the family spent apart while Elihu, Sr., was living and working in Cuba and later while the boys were living with their grandparents for a time. Of particular note is an 1850 letter from Vedder to his mother expressing his interest in drawing.

Family correspondence consists primarily of letters between and amongst Vedder, his father, and his brother (Vedder's letters to his father detail his travels in Europe from 1857 to 1860 and his first attempts to earn a living by drawing); letters between Caroline R. Vedder, her mother, sisters, and nieces; letters between Vedder and his wife when either one of them was away from home, traveling or conducting business; and letters between Caroline R. Vedder and the children: Enoch, when he was away at a school and then living in the U.S. and Anita, when she was traveling and away from home.

Personal correspondence concerns matters such as Vedder's engagement and marriage to Caroline Rosekrans, the death and settling the estate of his brother, Alexander, his travels, including a trip up the Nile in 1889-1890, and his friendship with other artists. Professional correspondence concerns: his illustrations and engravings of his work for various books and poems, including Enoch Arden (1863) and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1884); the exhibiiton of his work (for instance, in the Paris International Exposition of 1878; in gallery shows in Boston and New York in 1880 and in London in 1899; and at the Architectural League of New York in 1895) as well as the unsuccessful attempt to show in the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1876; the sale of his work to private individuals and commissions for work; the reproduction and copyright of his work; Vedder's published protest in the December 1878 issue of L'Art; his award of first prize in the Competition of Christmas Cards at the American Art Gallery, and the subsequent reproduction and sale of his Christmas cards; a mural project for the Chicago World's Fair in 1892; a proposed mural project for the Boston Public Library; his book The Digressions of V (1910); and various other financial and business matters.

Also found is some posthumous correspondence sent and received by Anita Vedder, concerning gifts, sales, and exhibitions of Vedder's work.

See Appendix for a list of selected correspondents from Series 2.
Arrangement note:
Correspondence is arranged chronologically. Undated correspondence is arranged alphabetically at the end of the series.
Appendix: Selected Correspondents from Series 2:
This list does not include the names of family members. Unless otherwise noted, date entries refer to correspondence found on Reels 515-526. When correspondence can also be found on Reel 2323, it is noted with a "see" or "see also" reference after the appropriate date.
