"Incidentally, about Porter's title of "General," an article in the Cherokee Advocate of October 21, 1871, indicates that he was given the rank of brigadier general and placed in command of the Creek militia during the Sands insurrection of 1871. Angie Debo, in her Road to Disappearance, page 193, also tells of this. During the Civil War he served as a company officer in McIntosh's Creek Mounted Volunteers, part of the forces of Stand Watie, the Cherokee general who fought so ably for the Confederacy. The picture of Porter must have been taken around 1863, for by the end of the war he had received a face wound which he covered with a mustache for most of the rest of his life." Letter of Ralph Goodwin to William C. Sturtevant, October 31, 1958.
