recorded December 30-31, 1956 by William H Talmadge
General:
Elder Charles Beck, pastor of the Way of the Cross Church of God in Christ, in Buffalo, NY, presides over his congregation, choir, and guest performers, in excerpts from two lively services, including hymns, gospel songs, shouts, sermonizing and prayer. Elder Beck not only leads the services and choir, but also sings and plays the trumpet, vibes and drums. Organ, piano and tambourines, along with guest performers, also enliven the proceedings. As Elder Beck proclaims, "No use letting the Devil have all the good tunes." David Talmadge, professor at the State University of New York, recorded the services in 1956, and wrote the liner notes, emphasizing the links of Holiness services to African religious practice.
