This garden was designed by Lois W. Poinier over a period of years from the early 1960s to the 1980s and was located on Lake Road in Short Hills. Bumsted Garden (No. 1) (Short Hills, New Jersey)
United States of America -- New Jersey -- Essex County -- Short Hills
Scope and Contents:
The folder includes worksheets and additional information.
General:
This garden on Wells Lane in Short Hills, dating to 1960-61, was one of two gardens designed by Lois W. Poinier for the Roy R. Bumsted family. The second was NJ324 (No. 2). It is possible that Garden No. 1 was designed for Roy R. Bumsted, Sr. It has been clearly documented that No. 2 was designed for Anne Halbach Bumsted and Roy R. Bumsted, Jr., although they may have also been the owners of Garden No. 1. Mrs. Bumsted, Jr. was the daughter of Ernest K. Halbach, who in 1948 had married Poinier's mother, Helen Page Wodell. For NJ392 a tree-shaded, natural surface outdoor seating area was constructed at the back of the house and a variety of plantings--azaleas, evergreens, rhododendrons, and perennials--were installed. The house may have been sold shortly after the landscaping work was completed because Lois Poinier designed NJ324 for the Bumsteds, on Stewart Road, around 1963-64. Or, it may have remained the property of Roy R. Bumsted, Sr.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois Poinier (garden designer, 1960-61), Anne Halbach Bumsted and Roy Remmey Bumsted, Jr. (former owners?, ca. 1960-61) and Roy Remmey Bumsted, Sr. (former owner?).

Scope and Contents:
The folders include worksheets and other information.
General:
This was the home of the late William Y. and Thelma Tipson Dear. In 1965 landscape architect Lois W. Poinier undertook an extensive design and installation project for the property, which is well-documented with both "before" and "after" images in the series. Poinier's plan featured an extensive herb and vegetable garden, complete with garden house, at the rear of the house, while the front of the property was highlighted by a tri-part brick walk with millstone insert. Molly Adams also photographed the property a number of years after the landscaping installation. Her images depict many aspects of the garden, including brick walkways, trellises, standards, and the overall form of the design. More contemporary images of the property (2022) found on the Internet show the garden to be dominated by shrubs and a few ornamental trees rather than the herbs and other garden plantings of former times.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, ca. 1965) and William Y. and Thelma Tipson Dear (former owners).
Related Materials:
Dear Garden related holdings consist of 2 folders (20 slides (photographs); 20 safety film negatives; 1 photographic print)
