The photograph depicts Yoruba woman dyeing fabric with indigo. "Dyeing always takes place against a wall, often in a secluded place to prevent interference from either domestic animals or small children and to keep the smell away from the main house. A good dye is sufficient for dyeing twelve skeins, or about three days of active use, after which the dye is thrown away." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
