"Kom el Hetan is the site of Amenophis (Amenhotep) III's mortuary temple. Unfortunately, virtually nothing remains of this once great edifice beyond the two immense 'Colossi of Memnon' which stood before its entrance. These great sandstone statues of Amenophis III flanked by small figures of his mother and his wife Tiye (Tiyi) are nearly 59ft high and were famous in antiquity for the bell-like tone which was emitted by the expanding stone of the northern figure at sunrise. Greek travellers thus equated the figure with Memnon, the son of Aurora, the goddess of the dawn, but repairs to the statue in the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus silenced the sound forever." [Wilkinson R., 2000: The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson]. "Ancient Thebes spanned the Nile River. The east bank is the site of modern Luxor and El Karnak, and was formerly the city of the living, with great temples and residences. On the west bank was the city of the dead, the "Necropolis of Thebes," containing the valleys of the royal tombs, royal mortuary temples, and the houses of priests and workers devoted to the dead." [The J.P.Getty Fund: Thesaurus of Geographic Names]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.

Scope and Contents:
"After the death of Thutmose II, Hatshepsut herself assumed pharaonic power and privilege, and for the construction of a temple for her cultus she selected a majestic half-circle of cliffs bounding the western end of the desert plain of Asasif. There stood the tomb and temple of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep, the Eleventh-Dynasty king who had reunited Egypt. Hatshepsut's clever architects admirably surmounted the difficulty by designing a temple on three levels, whose upper steps covered the underlying gravel slope. The three levels were linked by straight ramps along the temple's central axis." [Haeny G., 1997: New Kingdom 'Mortuary Temples' and 'Mansions of Millions of Years'. Temples of Ancient Egypt. Cornell University Press]. "Ancient Thebes spanned the Nile River. The east bank is the site of modern Luxor and El Karnak, and was formerly the city of the living, with great temples and residences. "The temple complex -for it originally consisted of two temples and a palace as well as many administrative buildings- was first called 'The Ramesseum' by Champollion. It was constructed for Ramesses by two architect-foremen, Penre of Coptos and Amenemone of Abydos, and built with a number of original features. Unfortunately, like so many of the mortuary complexes of western Thebes, the life of the temple was not to be long. The mighty statue of the seated Ramesses II, which now lies toppled and fragmented in the temple's second court, originally was set up on the south side of the entrance into the Ramesseum's second court. The second court was originally bounded by a portico on three sides, with Osiride statues of the king against the pillars of its eastern and western sides." "Due to a shared cultural background, common social and economic conditions and inherited building materials and techniques, slight variations distinguish the character of the majority of villages in the various regions of Egypt (Nubian villages in the south are an exception). The main vernacular types of building found in rural areas are houses of prayer, cemeteries and dwellings. The dwelling -a cluster of which forms the community- generally does not exceed two storeys. It serves as a home, a store and a stable. Elaborate decorations and even paintings can sometimes be found on specific house walls, although in some instances these are temporary, as in murals in Egypt which celebrate -and announce- the return of an individual from the pilgrimage to the 'Holy Kaba' in Mecca." "The 'revered one before Ra, Overseer of the City and Vizier, Ramose, justified', a Theban official, apparently did not follow Akhenaten (Akhenaton) to Armana. The decoration of his tomb consists of scenes in beautiful low relief in the style of Amenhotep III and other scenes in the realistic style initiated by Akhenaten (scenes of the pharaoh and queen at the window of appearance; mourning women)." [Freed R.E., markowitz Y.J., D'auria S.H., 1999: Pharaohs of the Sun. Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Tutankhamen. Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown and Company]. "Ancient Thebes spanned the Nile River. The east bank is the site of modern Luxor and El Karnak, and was formerly the city of the living, with great temples and residences. On the west bank was the city of the dead, the "Necropolis of Thebes," containing the valleys of the royal tombs, royal mortuary temples, and the houses of priests and workers devoted to the dead." [The J. P. Getty Fund: Thesaurus of Geographical Names]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Institute of Architects, directing the Egyptian portion of the documentary on Ancient Egypt, March 1965 and September 1965.
