Scope and Contents:
The microfilmed Albert Winslow Barker selected papers contain biographical information, including resumes and a typescript by Barker's wife; correspondence with his publisher and dealer, Elizabeth Whitmore; correspondence with Bolton Brown, John Taylor Arms, Albert Fowler, print societies, and suppliers; letters regarding exhibitions; a manuscript on lithography; notes on a course with Brown; clippings; photographs; drawings; and information on the Bolton Brown memorial exhibition organized by Barker.
Biographical / Historical:
Albert Winslow Barker (1874-1947) was a lithographer and educator in Pennsylvania. Born in Chicago, Barker studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before teaching at the School of Industrial Arts in Philadelphia. In 1913 he enrolled at Haverford College and earned his A.B. before earning his Ph.D. in Classical Greek from the University of Pennsylvania in 1921. From 1921 to 1929 he served as the Director of Art Education in the Public School District of Wilmington, Delaware. In 1927 Barker studied with lithographer Bolton Brown. Barker devoted the rest of his artistic career to lithography, producing over 200 works.

The microfilm of selections from the Seymour Adelman collection consists of materials relating to the Sartain family and to Thomas and Susan Eakins.
The Sartain materials include letters (1845-1945) to Emily Sartain, Harriet Sartain, John Sartain, Samuel Sartain, and William Sartain. Correspondents include artists William Trost Richards, James Hamilton, Rusell Smith, and Xanthus Smith.
Eakins material includes letters (1931-1958) to Adelman from Charles Bregler, including a few responses from Adelman; Susan Eakins correspondence (1931-1938), mostly from Eakins to Adelman regarding paintings, commissions, exhibitions, articles, and personal matters; and postcards to Susan Eakins and Thomas Eakins (1890-1933) including one from Walter Pach to Susan Eakins. One letter (1868) from Thomas Eakins to Benjamin Eakins; and two letters to Thomas Eakins are also included. Also found are Thomas Eakins' three account/ledger sheets (1870-1895); miscellaneous Eakins family materials; and photographs by Thomas Eakins, Susan Eakins, and others, primarily formal and informal portraits of Thomas and Susan Eakins, their families, and pets.
Biographical / Historical:
Seymour Adelman (1906-1985) was a collector of rare books, prints, letters, and ephemera in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was on committees and boards for several literary and artistic institutions, including the Philadelphia Academy of Art, the print and drawing committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the rare book committees of the University of Pennsylvania and the Free Library of Philadelphia. Adelman met Susan Eakins in the 1930s and became her close friend and promoter of the work of Thomas Eakins.
The Sartain family were a family of engravers and painters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John Sartain came to the United States from England in 1830 and pioneered mezzotint engraving in the US. Of his eight children, his sons William and Samuel and daughter Emily became artists, as did his granddaughter Harriet. His son Henry, Harriet's father, was a printer and printed engravings in Philadelphia.
Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) was a realist painter and educator in Philadelphia. Eakins taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and promoted a curriculum based on the study of the human figure. He was forced to resign in 1886 after a dispute regarding the use of nude male models in life drawing classes with women artists present. Susan Hanah Macdowell Eakins (1851-1938) was photographer and painter who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins, whom she later married. She devoted much of her time to supporting her husband's career. After Thomas Eakins' death in 1916, she painted prolifically. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1976.

With two exceptions, the interviews were conducted by Ruth Bowman. She is the subject of two interviews, and one KUSC "Live from Trump's" radio program was hosted by Myra Livingston.
In 1976, while attending an arts administration program offered by the British Arts Council, Bowman inteviewed museum administrators and educators in England (6 sounds cassettes).
Serving as an advisor to Metroplitan Museum of Art Director Thomas Hoving, Bowman interviewed more than a dozen people in 1976 concerning the benefits, drawbacks, and ramifications of the Annenberg Fine Arts Center proposed for The Metropolitan Museum of Art (12 sound cassettes). The controversial plan aroused much concern and Annenberg eventually withdrew his offer.
Among the interviews with miscellaneous individuals (4 sound reels, 6 sound cassettes, and 2 transcripts) , of particular interest is an interview with Noguchi concerning a possible commission for a sculpture at Bryn Mawr College, his mother's alma mater. A 1974 interview with Bowman concerns her work at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Bowman was the host of "Sounds of Seeing," a radio show produced by KUSC radio in Los Angeles, 1979-1983. With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, "Sounds of Seeing" aired Bowman's interviews with artists, art historians, museum curators and directors, conservators, local politicians, and others on a wide range of art related topics (7 sound reels and 69 sound cassettes). On "Live from Trump's," a KUSC radio program broadcast from Trump's Restaurant, Bowman conversed with guests about local exhibitions and other arts events.
Interviews with 12 American abstract artists were conducted by Ruth Bowman (Ruth Gurin at the time) as background research for her intended thesis on the subject. Plans changed, and the thesis she eventually wrote was "Thomas Pollock Anshutz, 1851-1912" (M.A., Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, 1971).
"Views on Art," her weekly radio show on WNYC, 1967-1973, featured interviews with artists, museum directors and curators, gallery owners and others who discussed their work and current exhibitions. Other topics covered include: art forgeries, underground movie making, museum management, art publishing, business and the arts, art and public relations, computers and the humanities, new art technologies, and trends in art education. (72 sound reels, 3 sound cassettes, and 1 transcript; 70 digital recordings).
Arrangement:
Interviews concerning the Annenberg Fine Arts Center, interviews of miscellaneous individuals, and WNYC "Views on Art" radio programs are alphabetized by interviewee. Those with museum administrators and educators are arraned chronologically, as are the interviews for KUSC radio shows "Sounds of Seeing" and "Live From Trump's." "Sounds of Seeing" interviews are housed in 1 folder and 4 smaller boxes within Box 14. Additional interviews recorded for other purposes are scattered among the subject files (series 4).

These records are the official minutes of the Board. They are compiled at the direction of the Secretary of the Smithsonian, who is also secretary to the Board, after
approval by the Regents' Executive Committee and by the Regents themselves. The minutes are edited, not a verbatim account of proceedings. For reasons unknown, there are no
manuscript minutes for the period from 1857 through 1890; and researchers must rely on printed minutes published in the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution instead.
Minutes are transferred regularly from the Secretary's Office to the Archives. Minutes less than 15 years old are closed to researchers. Indexes exist for the period from
1907 to 1946 and can be useful.
Historical Note:
The Smithsonian Institution was created by authority of an Act of Congress approved August 10, 1846. The Act entrusted direction of the Smithsonian to a body called
the Establishment, composed of the President; the Vice President; the Chief Justice of the United States; the secretaries of State, War, Navy, Interior, and Agriculture; the
Attorney General; and the Postmaster General. In fact, however, the Establishment last met in 1877, and control of the Smithsonian has always been exercised by its Board of
Regents. The membership of the Regents consists of the Vice President and the Chief Justice of the United States; three members each of the Senate and House of Representatives;
two citizens of the District of Columbia; and seven citizens of the several states, no two from the same state. (Prior to 1970 the category of Citizen Regents not residents
of Washington consisted of four members). By custom the Chief Justice is Chancellor. The office was at first held by the Vice President. However, when Millard Fillmore succeeded
to the presidency on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1851, Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney was chosen in his stead. The office has always been filled by the Chief Justice
since that time.
