This accession consists of records that document the administration and activities of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI). Records cover the creation of SPI and its history, funding, and creative projects. Materials include correspondence, meeting notes, reports, funding and project proposals, exhibition materials, budgets, brochures, and news clippings. Some materials predate the establishment of SPI and were created under the International Art Museums Division.

This accession consists of materials compiled by the Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI). SPI was established in 2001 to develop a model for making Smithsonian Institution (SI) photographs more accessible and visible to the public. It collected images from SI museums and other units for use on its websites. In addition, these materials were also used in the creation of the book "At First Sight: Photography and the Smithsonian." SPI became part of the Smithsonian Institution Archives in 2009.

Materials include correspondence, background information, brochures, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Some materials are in electronic format.
