Biographical / Historical:
Sidney Janis Gallery (est. 1948-1999) was an art gallery in New York, N.Y., specializing in contemporary avant-garde art. Sidney Janis opened the gallery with his wife Harriet at 15 E. 57th Street in Manhattan. The gallery became a leading exhibitor of Pop art after the groundbreaking exhibition New Realists in 1962. The gallery moved to 110 W. 57th Street in the 1980s, and after Janis's death in 1989 the gallery was directed by his son, Carroll Janis.
Related Materials:
Also found at the Archives of American Art are two oral history interviews with Sidney Janis. One interview conducted March 21-September 26, 1972, by Paul Cummings, and one interview conducted on October 15 and November 18, 1981, by Avis Berman.

The collection was donated in 1999 by Carroll Janis, son of Sidney Janis.

A.W. Elson & Co. was a Boston-based firm that made photogravure plates and carbon prints around 1900.

George de Forest Brush was an American painter most known for his romanticized images of American Indian life and his Renaissance-style portraits. He painted "The Indian and the Lily" in 1887.

Biographical / Historical:
Alan Gussow (1931-1997) was a painter and writer in New York. He studied painting at Cooper Union and at the American Academy in Rome. Gussow honed a visionary blend of abstraction and representation with nature as his primary subject in his art. His book A Sense of Place: The Artist and the American Land, published in 1972, couples works by American landscape artists spanning four centuries with excerpts of their own writing.

Materials consist of general research files and artist files for use in the book A Sense of Place: The Artist and the American Land.
Arrangement:
The series is arranged with research files at the beginning followed correspondence and other supporting materials, transparencies, manuscripts of the book, a copy of the book, reviews, and audio reels of artist interviews for the book. There is one file, "General Correspondence" placed right before the audio reels that was listed as having correspondence related both to this series and series two. The final three audio reels are miscellaneous in nature and may relate to either of the two series.
