Biographical / Historical:
Helen Richey (1909 - 1947) was an aviation pioneer who made headlines as a stunt pilot, a racing champion, a holder of speed and altitude records, a flight instructor, an Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and Womens Air Service Pilot (WASP) during WWII, the first women to pilot a commercial airliner on a regular scheduled run, and as the first woman to ever fly the United States mail. In April of 1930, Richey enrolled as a student pilot at Bettis Field's Curtiss-Wright flying school and on June 28, 1930, she earned her pilot's license. In December 1930, Richey was granted a limited commercial pilot's license bythe Department of Commerce. During the 1930s, Richey set a number of records and placed in several races, including as a co-pilot to Amelia Earhart in the 1936 Bendix Race. In 1934 Richey applied for a pilot's job with Central Airlines. She was hired and flew Central's route between Washington and Detroit. However, the Bureau of Air Commerce warned Centeral management to keep her on the ground in bad weather and the pilot's union rejected her application for membership. Due to these restrictions, Richey resigned from Central in October 1935. The Bureau of Air Commerce then offered Helen a new job as an air marking pilot for the government. She stayed with the air marking service until 1937 when the job was completed. In 1940 Richey was the first woman to earn an instructor's license and she was appointed an instructor for air cadets at Pittsburgh - Butler Airport. In 1942, she joined the American wing of the British Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), where she ferried aicraft and needed materials thoughout the British Isles. Richey headed the ATA's American Group from 1942 until April 1943, when she returned to the States and joined the WASPs. Unable to find aviation employment after the WASPs disbanded in 1944, she committed suicide in 1947.

Biographical / Historical:
At the end of World War II, an unknown United States Marine brought home several Japanese-language items. These items were subsequently sold and the purchaser's son later donated them to the National Air and Space Museum. In 2003 and 2004, Museum volunteers, Mr. Koji Hayama and Mr. Tom Momiyama, translated parts of the material and they believe that they were created by a Mr. Yamada, who was probably part of an aircraft ground crew with occasional flight duties, and served in Manchuria, Korea, Burma, and the Philippines.

Captured German Technical Documents (Technical Intelligence Center Film)

Creator:
United States. Navy  Search this
Extent:
2 Microfilm reels
Type:
Collection descriptions
Archival materials
Microfilm reels
Microfilms
Date:
1941-1946
Summary:
This collection consists of microfilmed translations of documents which were captured in Germany and compiled and microfilmed by the US Navy. The documents cover a variety of topics including long-range bombers, aircraft propulsion, infrared research, optics, turbomachines, flutter research, torpedoes, radar, as well as other technical topics.
Scope and Contents:
This collection is consists of two rolls of microfilm containing translations of documents which were captured in Germany and compiled and microfilmed by the US Navy.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects.
Arrangement:
The documents in this collection were all assigned document numbers by the Navy prior to microfilming. Unfortunately the system used to create these numbers is not known, but it is a three-part system consisting of one alphabetic character and two numeric groups. The alphabetic character seems to be a general subject code, which appears to be as follows:

A -- Aeronautics or Aerodynamics

E -- Electronics

M -- Metallurgy or Materials

O -- Ordnance

The first numeric group appears to be a sequential number and the second numeric group the last two digits of the year in which the document was cataloged. Thus document number A 3074 46 would relate generally to aeronautics or aerodynamics and was either the 3074th document cataloged overall in 1946 or the 3074th aeronautics document cataloged in 1946.

This collection consists of short (one document long) strips of 35mm microfilm compiled into two 100 foot rolls. The origin of this compilation is not known, and there is no apparent order to the compilation. The microfilm roll listing which follows lists the documents in the order they appear in the compilation.
Historical note:
In the final days of World War II the advancing Allied armies captured a large number of documents from the German and Japanese governments. These documents were taken to various sites in Europe and the United States for evaluation and appraisal. Those documents considered valuable were microfilmed for preservation.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of eight 120 mm negatives that feature Edward V. "Eddie" Rickenbacker on the final leg of his South Pacific inspection tour of 1942, resumed only days after his rescue at sea after a previous transport plane, a Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress, s/n 40-3089, went down in the Pacific. Also pictured are Major Charles E. Shelton and Major "Chick" Luna.
Biographical / Historical:
Edward Vernon Rickenbacker (1890-1973) had only a sixth grade education but became a leading aviation figure in both military and civilian circles. Rickenbacker was a fighter ace during World War I, where as a member of the 94th Aero Squadron he shot down 22 German aircraft and 4 observation balloons. He became a colonel in the Army Air Reserves and during World War II helped form the Military Air Transport Services. In October of 1942, during an inspection tour of the Pacific theater, Rickenbacker's Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress went off course and was ditched over water. The surviving seven members of the crew were rescued 24 days later, suffering from exposure, starvation, and dehydration. In the civilian sector, Rickenbacker worked at several airlines, including Fokker Aircraft Corporation and American Airways, before going to work at Eastern Airlines in 1934. In 1939 Rickenbacker became Eastern's president and chairman, positions he held until 1963.
