Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of three scrapbooks and five logbooks belonging to Denis H. Carey. The scrapbooks contain photographs of Royal Navy Air Stations, ships, flying boats, floatplanes and land planes used by the British around 1918. They include approximately 28 different airplanes, 9 different ships and aerial views of various air stations. The five logbooks document Carey's flying career in the Royal Air Force (1919-1936) [and perhaps Royal Naval Air Service?]. Two hundred and fifteen of the photographs from his scrapbooks that pertain to seaplanes at the Isle of Grain facility are found on National Air and Space Museum Videodisc 2B. More than three dozen types of aircraft are represented in the collection, including: the De Havilland D.H. 9A and D.H. 10 Amiens, the Fairey Atalanta, the Bristol F.2B, and the Parnall Puffin. Also pictured are several aircraft that have crashed. The seaplanes are shown on the airfield, on the HMS Eagle carrier, at takeoff, landing, and taxiing both on land and water. Only a small number of photographs display aircraft weaponry, with even fewer showing any Naval personnel.
Biographical / Historical:
Denis Carey was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. According to his logbooks, Carey flew over eighty different types of aircraft. The seaplane test-site on the Isle of Grain was one of the principal sites out of which he flew. This facility was established in 1912 by Winston Churchill for the Royal Naval Air Service (which merged with the Royal Air Force in 1918). Following World War I, test-flying of seaplanes continued to be carried out at the Isle of Grain.

Sky Fighters of France Exhibit Program (Farré)

Programs
Date:
undated
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of the Washington, DC program for the exhibit, "Sky Fighters of France." Displayed in the galleries of the Ladies of the Washington Club, the exhibit was shown in Washington from April 24 to April 29 (year unknown, but not prior to 1917). This program includes an introduction, nineteen black and white images of Farré's paintings and portraits, a description of 176 of his works, photographic images of some of the sky fighters of France, and an article entitled, "With the Sky Fighters of France" by Farré.
Biographical / Historical:
"Sky Fighters of France" was an exhibit of works by Lieutenant Henri Farré. It consisted of paintings portraying air battles that Farré actually observed or took part in during World War I. Prior to the war, Farré had been a painter, exhibiting his work at the Salon every year from 1896 to the outbreak of the first World War. At that time, he offered his services to France and was eventually promoted to the rank of Observer-Bombardier, a role which provided him with the subject matter of his paintings. An exhibit, "Sky Fighters of France," was sent to the United States by the French government with the intention of showing it in all of the large cities of this country; the proceeds of the exhibition went to the children of French aviators killed in action.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of one 8 x 10.5 inch, two-sided, black-and-white leaflet, in German, entitled "Die Note des Präsidenten Wilson vom 23 October 1918."
Biographical / Historical:
In August 1918, General John Joseph Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) initially commanded the U.S. First Army in the attack now called the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (aka Battle of the Argonne Forest, Grand Offensive, or Hundred Days Offensive), east of Verdun, in a joint attempt with the French to cut off the entire German Second Army. General William Mitchell and 500 aircraft from the United States Air Services supported this advance militarily, and also dropped propaganda leaflets over the German lines. The offensive was slow and difficult, was halted on 30th September, and resumed on 4th October. The influenza-weakened German Army began to retreat on 4th November, and fresh troops in the First Army had advanced to the Hindenburg line under the command of Hunter Liggett when the Armistice was announced on 11 November, 1918.
