Scope and Contents:
This scrapbook pertains to the homecoming of Patrol Squadron 661 in 1962. The scrapbook includes the following: narrative, tentative plan of execution, and schedule of events for the homecoming ceremonies; letter of appreciation to families; notification to personnel of ceremonies; press release/fact sheet/unit history; newspaper clippings; notification of radio and television coverage; ten black and white photographs; land etter of appreciation to employers.
Biographical / Historical:
Due to the escalation of international tension brought on by the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961, several naval reserve squadrons were involuntarily recalled (Public Law 87-117) to meet the threat of further Soviet aggression. Patrol Squadron (VP) 661 of the United States Navy Reserve (USNR) was one of these squadrons called to serve on active duty in support of the Berlin Crisis. The squadron was placed under the operational control of Commander Fleet Air Wing FIVE, of the United States Atlantic Fleet. During nine months of duty, the squadron's distinctive orange markings on their Lockheed P2V-5F Neptunes could be seen as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as the Panama Canal Zone. On June 29, 1962 the squadron returned to the Naval Air Reserve Training Unit (NARTU) Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. This was the VP 61's second call to active duty; the earlier time had been during the Korean Conflict in 1952.

Summary:
This collection consists of approximately 1.28 cubic feet of material relating to the Goodyear ZPG-3W non-rigid airship as well as material on other Goodyear airships as well as general historical airship information. There is also one folder of material pertaining to the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Silent Joe II airship.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of approximately 1.28 cubic feet of material relating to the Goodyear ZPG-3W non-rigid airship including an Illustrated Parts Breakdown (NAVAER 01-195PDA-504); photographs; news clippings; photocopies of four technical drawings; and press releases. The collection also contains some material on other Goodyear airships as well as general historical airship information. There is also one folder of material pertaining to the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Silent Joe II airship which includes photographs and documents.

Biographical / Historical:
The Goodyear ZPG-3W was an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) airship built for the U. S. Navy. At the time of its construction, the ZPG-3W was the largest non-rigid airship ever built and featured advanced electronics and the largest antenna ever airborne. The ZPG-3W made its first flight on July 21, 1958 and was delivered to NAS Lakehurst (NJ) in June 1959. The ZPG-3W set a new record for continuous time spent on patrol. In total, four ZPG-3Ws were built and delivered to NAS Lakehurst where they were operated by Airship Early Warning Squadron One (ZW-1). The final ZPG-3W, delivered to Lakehurst in April 1960, was the last airship accepted by the U. S. Navy.

Scope and Contents:
This collection contains information about Admiral Leslie from the years 1922-1977, covering his Navy career and including the World War II years and his part in the Battle of Midway. The collection contains the following types of material: official Navy documents, letters from researchers who sought information on the Battle of Midway, personal papers, newspaper clippings, a magazine article with general information on the Battle of Midway and post-War publications. The collection also contains numerous photographs but none pertaining to the Battle of Midway. Most of the photographs are not labeled and show base life, including many of base athletic teams, mostly baseball.
Biographical / Historical:
Admiral Maxwell Franklin Leslie (1902-1984) attended the University of Washington before entering the US Naval Academy in 1922. He was commissioned Ensign in 1926, received flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 1929 and was designated Naval Aviator in 1930. When the US entered World War II, he was Executive Officer of Bombing Squadron 3, based on the USS Saratoga. He later commanded that unit, operating from the USS Yorktown during the Battle of Midway. For extraordinary heroism there, he was awarded the Navy Cross. He also flew with his squadron operating from from the USS Enterprise while escorting the USS Hornet for the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, April 17, 1942. He continued to serve the Navy overseas during World War II and after the war spent the rest of his career on various ships and bases. He retired in 1956. In addition to the Navy Cross, he was presented the Bronze Star Medal with combat "V" and the Commendation Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation to the USS Enterprise, American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

This collection consists of a scrapbook and history on the USS Enterprise, and a few miscellaneous items on Chesley Toll.
Biographical / Historical:
Chesley A. Toll was a chief machinist's mate on the USS Enterprise, and was awarded the Navy Citation award for his work aboard the ship. The USS Enterprise was the only carrier to fight throughout the entire war. It was engaged in every major action, except one, and earned 20 combat stars. 'The Big E,' as the ship was called, shot down 911 enemy aircraft, sunk 71 ships and damaged 192 other ships. Sunk six times according to Japanese propaganda, this carrier received Presidential and Navy Unit Citations. After the war, Toll became a recruiting officer for the Navy.

This collection consists of copies of letters written between Ellyson and others concerning then-Lieutenant Ellyson's aviation experiments of 1911-1914. Many of the letters are directed to Captain Washington I. Chambers and include monthly progress reports and travel and expense statements.
Biographical / Historical:
Theodore G. 'Spuds' Ellyson (1885-1928), Glenn Curtiss' first seaplane pupil, became the first United States Naval Aviator. Ellyson flew the first night flight by a naval seaplane (the Curtiss A-1) and the first successful catapult launch from an anchored barge. Commander Ellyson made many significant contributions in naval aviation before his death in 1928, in an airplane crash off Hampton Roads, Virginia.

This accession consists of forty (40) boxes of technical publications from the United States Navy Naval Air Propulsion Center. The collection consists of mostly AEL/AED Formal Reports. There are also some Letter Report Numbers and miscellaneous files containing reports on Lycoming and Wasp engines.
Biographical / Historical:
The Naval Air Propulsion Center was established by the merger of the Naval Air Turbine Test Station (NATTS) and the Aeronautical Engine Laboratory (AEL). The AEL, established in 1915, was responsible for testing small gas turbine engines, auxiliary power units and engine starters. The NATTS's mission was the testing and evaluation of the turbojet, turboprop, ramjet, and pulsejet engines, accessories and components
