Summary:
Herbert J. Nash appears to have been an amateur photographer, aviation enthusiast, and airplane photograph collector and based in the New York City area. This collection consists of just over a thousand images collected from a variety of sources and reflects Nash's specific interests: Aero Spacelines Guppies, single-engine Bell fighters and racing conversions, the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Family (Model 464), the Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter Family (Model 367), the Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser Family, and aircraft produced by the Naval Aircraft Factory. Photographs are predominantly small-format black and white prints taken in the United States between 1949 and 1969.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists primarily of 2.75 x 4.5 inch black and white print photographs, but also includes some color photographs, a few color postcards, and a few three-view drawings. Approximately 95 percent of the images in this collection are less than 4 x 5 inches in size. Most photographs were taken in the United States, with a few likely taken in England (UK). Some photographs appear to have been taken in storage or salvage yards. Topics depicted reflect Nash's specific interests: Aero Spacelines (Aero Spacelines Mini Guppy, Aero Spacelines Pregnant Guppy, and Aero Spacelines Super Guppy); single-engine Bell fighters and racing conversions (Bell P-39 Airacobra Family, Bell P-59 Airacomet Family, Bell P-63 Kingcobra Family, Bell FM-1 Airacuda Family); the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Family (Model 464); the Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter Family (Model 367); the Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser Family; and various Naval Aircraft Factory models including the Naval Aircraft Factory N3N Family (XN3N-1, N3N-1, XN3N-2, XN3N-3, N3N-3), Naval Aircraft Factory PBN-1 Nomad, Naval Aircraft Factory SBN-1 (Naval Aircraft Factory version of the Brewster XSBA-1), Naval Aircraft Factory SON-1 Seagull (Naval Aircraft Factory version of the Curtiss SOC-3), Naval Aircraft Factory TS-1, Naval Aircraft Factory XP4N-1 (XP2N-1), Naval Aircraft Factory XP4N-2 (P2N-1), Naval Aircraft Factory XT2N-1, and Naval Aircraft Factory XTN-1. The Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser section includes airliners in service with several airlines, including Pan American Airways (PAA), British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), Transocean (TAL), Northwest / Northwest Orient Airlines, United Air Lines, and Rutas Aéreas Nacionales, S.A. (RANSA).
Arrangement:
The photographs are arranged in six subject groups: Aero Spacelines, Bell, Boeing B-52, Boeing C-97, Boeing 377, and Naval Aircraft Factory. Similar aircraft tend to be clumped together within a group, but that is not always the case. In 1984, all items in this collection were reproduced on the first side (Side A) of National Air and Space Museum Archival Videodisc 2, a LaserDisc CAV format 12-inch (30 cm) optical disc published by the Smithsonian Institution. Print numbers applied during videodisc production are used as item-level image numbers (print numbers NASM 00129025 to NASM 00130094, videodisc frame capture numbers VD-2A29025 to VD-2A30094) and the images are stored in videodisc number order.
Biographical / Historical:
Herbert J. Nash appears to have been an amateur photographer, aviation enthusiast, and airplane photograph collector and based in the New York City area. This collection consists of just over a thousand images collected from a variety of sources; most are from private sources (generally other aviation enthusiasts such as himself) but also from aerospace manufacturers, the United States Air Force (USAF), airlines, and the mail-order aviation photography provider Aeroplane Photo Supply. Many of the photographs—particularly those in the Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser section—were likely taken by Nash himself.

Summary:
This collection consists of one 8 x 10 inch humorously posed photograph of United Air Lines flight attendants Marcelline Amelia Garvis and Ruby Reykalin, as well as three additional photographs and two undated news clippings relating to Garvis.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of one 8 x 10 inch humorously posed photograph of United Air Lines flight attendants Marcelline Amelia Garvis and Ruby Reykalin, both in uniform, beside an aircraft wearing feathery wings. Garvis is pretending to "clip" one of Reykalin's wings with large scissors and one has already been removed as part of a mock ceremony after they resigned to get married.

In September 2022, three additional photographs and two undated news clippings were added to this collection. One clipping shows Marcelline Amelia Garvis modeling a new United Air Lines flight attendant uniform, and the second clipping details Garvis' talk on her career at the "Tuesday Luncheon Club" and notes that she was the first woman ever to do so. The additional photographs consist of a portrait of Garvis in uniform, and photographs of her at work assisting family members to board a United Air Lines aircraft.
Arrangement:
This collection is in original order.
Biographical / Historical:
Marcelline Amelia Garvis (1910--2001) was a registered nurse and an early flight attendant for United Air Lines. Martus and Dorothy K. de Silva's Air France Concorde flight on May 28, 1978: Air France flight certificates, along with letters explaining the certificates; two copies of the "Concorde Network" brochures, one from de Silva's is annotated with flight information; three postcards of the Air France Concorde; one 8.5 by 10 inch photograph of the Air France Concorde; a "Guide for the Supersonic Traveller" brochure, produced by Air France; and two menus. This collection also contains two Trans World Service (TWA) menus, presumedly from their trip back to the United States.
Arrangement:
Arranged by type.
Biographical / Historical:
The first supersonic airliner to enter service, the Concorde flew thousands of passengers across the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound for over 25 years. Designed and built by Aérospatiale of France and the British Aviation Corporation (BAC), the graceful Concorde was a stunning technological achievement that could not overcome serious economic problems. In 1976, Air France and British Airways jointly inaugurated Concorde service to destinations around the globe. Carrying up to 100 passengers in great comfort, the Concorde catered to first class passengers for whom speed was critical. It could cross the Atlantic in fewer than four hour—half the time of a conventional jet airliner. However its high operating costs resulted in very high fares that limited the number of passengers who could afford to fly it. These problems and a shrinking market eventually forced the reduction of service until all Concordes were retired in 2003.

Arrangement:
Arranged by type of material.
Biographical / Historical:
Eastern Air Lines was originally formed as Pitcairn Aviation, Inc. in 1927. In July 1929 it was acquired by North American Aviation as the Eastern Air Lines Division and, in January 1930, was renamed Eastern Air Transport. By February 1933, Eastern had acquired Ludington Airlines, giving Eastern routes to most major eastern cities, including New York, Atlanta, Miami, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. In 1934 the airline was renamed Eastern Air Lines and introduced Douglas DC-2s on its longer routes. In 1937 Eastern began DC-3 service and acquired Wedell-Williams Air Service Corp, thereby extending its routes westward to Houston. North American sold its holdings in Eastern to a group headed by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. By 1960 Eastern had extended its coverage to Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico, as well as westward to Detroit and St. Louis. In January 1960 Eastern introduced jet service with DC-8s and, in April 1961, inaugurated "Air Shuttle" service between Boston, New York, and Washington, DC with its propeller-driven aircraft. By 1975 Eastern's network covered 100 cities in 30 states, as well as Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. In 1986 Eastern was bought by Texas Air, making Texas Air the largest airline in the United States. Following labor problems, including a strike by Eastern's machinists which was supported by the pilots and flight attendants, Eastern declared Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in 1989.

David L. Foster, Jr., (d. 2010) had a four year apprenticeship with Eastern Air Lines before becoming a 37 year employee and a manager in the Aircraft Service Center. After his retirement from Eastern, Foster worked for 9 years with the Dee Howard Company.

Pan American World Airways was active in the airline industry from 1927, when it established a regular scheduled international service, to its bankruptcy in late 1991. Pan American was the first American airline to operate a permanent international air service. From its first route between Key West and Havana, Pan Am extended its routes into the rest of the Caribbean, Central America and South America. In 1936, Pan Am inaugurated passenger service in the Pacific, and began service in the Atlantic in 1939. Pan Am started around-the-world commercial air service in 1947. Besides setting many 'firsts' with routes, Pan Am also established 'firsts' in the aircraft technology they chose, such as being the first to use Boeing 747s in regular scheduled services.

Summary:
Hans Groenhoff (1906-1985) was a celebrated American aviation photographer from the 1930s through the 1960s, also working as a pilot, journalist, editor, correspondent, and—in his retirement years—as an aviation tourism publicist for the Bahamas. This collection of 25,550 images consists of Groenhoff's collection of negatives and transparencies, spanning his career from 1933 to 1975.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of Groenhoff's collection of negatives and transparencies, spanning his career from 1933 to 1975, and includes images of military and civilian aircraft and events, glider and sailplane activities, air shows and races, airlines and airports, weather (clouds) and aerial images.
Arrangement:
Series 1: 1962 Acquisition, approximately 24,250 images; photography made by Groenhoff in the period 1933 to 1962, consists of mixed medium format black-and-white negative single-sheet or cut-frame roll film (Subseries 1, HGA), 35mm black-and-white roll film (Subseries 2, HGD), and mixed medium format color transparency (positive) film (Subseries 3, HGC), as well as black-and-white print enlargements made by the Smithsonian of selected images. Also included in this series are a small number of posed portraits of Groenhoff at work.

Series 2: 1984 Acquisition (HGB), approximately 1,300 images; photography made by Groenhoff in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily during his employment with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, consists of mixed format black-and-white and color roll film and a small number of 35mm color slides.

Series 3: "Focus On Flight" Exhibit and Book Materials. This small series consists of mixed materials (copy photography and documents) used in the creation of the NASM exhibit, Focus on Flight: Four Decades of Aerial Photography (Rudy Arnold and Hans Groenhoff) (November 1984 through September 1985), and the related book by curator E. T. (Tim) Wooldridge, Focus on Flight: The Aviation Photography of Hans Groenhoff, published for the National Air and Space Museum by Smithsonian Institution Press (Washington, D.C.), 1985.
Biographical/Historical note:
Hans Groenhoff (1906-1985) was born and educated in Germany, but emigrated to the United States in 1927. Residing in New York City, Groenhoff pursued his interest in aviation and photography. Following in the footsteps of his brother Günther, a famous aviator and pioneer glider pilot in Germany, Hans Groenhoff became an active glider pilot in the nearby Elmira, New York, area, nurturing a lifelong fascination with clouds and aerial photography. Groenhoff's photography career took off when he inherited two cameras following the death of his brother in a glider accident in 1932; he went on to work as a photographer, journalist, editor, and correspondent, with his photographs and articles published in mainstream magazines such as Life, Colliers, Esquire, National Geographic, and The Saturday Evening Post, as well as aviation publications such as Air Trails Pictorial, Sportsman Pilot, Aero Digest, and especially Flying and Popular Aviation, for whom he was a regular correspondent. Groenhoff also shot advertising and publicity photography for aircraft manufacturers and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Following the death of his first wife, Fridel Barth, in 1954, Groenhoff moved to the Miami, Florida, area to take advantage of better weather for photographing aircraft. In 1956, Groenhoff married Frances Semman, who assisted him in his work. In his retirement years, Groenhoff was employed by the Bahamas Government to promote the Islands as a tourist destination for private and sport aviation, founding their popular "Bahamas Flying Treasure Hunt" events which ran annually for several years.

Hans Groenhoff's aviation photography career is documented in the book Focus on Flight: The Aviation Photography of Hans Groenhoff by E. T. Woodridge (Smithsonian Institution, 1985).

Biographical / Historical:

Biographical/Historical note:
Morten S. Beyer (1921-2010) was one of the first aviation consultants and the author of articles and newsletters analyzing the economic trends of aviation. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1943, Beyer started his aviation career at Pan American Airways (PAA), where he established and directed the first centralized scheduling and operations control office. He left PAA in 1948 to work for Capital Airlines, Inc., where he was the assistant to the Senior Vice President of Operations and Maintenance. In 1960, Beyer went to work at Riddle Airlines, Inc., as Senior Vice President, Operations and Sales, of Riddle's overall activities. From 1964 to 1967, Beyer was employed by Trans World Airlines, Inc. (TWA), where he was appointed the System General Manager and Deputy Director General for Saudi Arabian Airlines, responsible for the performance of TWA's contract with Saudi Arabian Airlines. From 1967-1971, Beyer was the President of Modern Air Transport, a charter airline, and in 1971 he become the President of Capitol Airlines where he remained until 1972 when he bought the stock of bankrupt Universal Airlines. He attempted to refinance the airline into a new company, Phoenix Airlines, but due to the nation's fuel crisis sparked by the Arab oil embargo, he failed to accomplish this and accepted the presidency of Johnson International Airlines in 1973.

In 1974, Beyer established AVMARK, an aviation international consulting company. As a regular feature he established one of the first aviation newsletters. He also published a book of Transport Aircraft Values (TAV), which forecasted aircraft values twenty years in to the future, using a formula that accounted for inflation, fuel price fluctuations and labor cost variables. This formula became a standard for aircraft appraisals and made Beyer a trusted appraiser and marketing expert. Beyer testified before Congress twice and was a guest-expert on many television news programs. In 1993, Beyer sold AVMARK and founded Morten Beyer and Associates, later Morten Beyer and Agnew, which continued aviation consulting in France and Japan. Beyer retired in 2003.

The following timeline covers key events in Morten Beyer's life as well as world events. Events involving Mr. Beyer are shown in normal type world events are shown in italics.

Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, L. Welch Pogue (1899–2003) was the second chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), serving from 1942 until 1946. During his tenure he led the regulation and development of the US airline industry through the Second World War and into the postwar expansion of commercial aviation. Of great significance, Pogue led the US delegation to the Convention on International Civil Aviation --- widely known as the Chicago Convention --- that brought together representatives from fifty-four nations in late 1944 where the rules and regulations of postwar international civil aviation were established under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is now a part of the United Nations. Pogue played a leading role in developing the standards and procedures for peaceful global navigation, and these agreements are still in effect. As an attorney in private practice, Pogue founded the firm of Pogue and Neal to continue his interest in civil aviation regulation, writing and lecturing widely and representing numerous airlines and other clients. The firm later became Jones, Day, Reavis, and Pogue, one of Washington's preeminent law firms and the fifth largest law firm in the United States. Pogue retired in 1981 but continued pursuing his aviation interests by joining the National Air and Space Museum as a docent for the next two decades. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 103.
