The typewritten list includes the crew and passengers which includes observers and a Congressional party. The list has been signed by most of the passengers and by two members of the crew. The list is part of an arrangement in a photo mat which measures approximately 15 x 23 inches and also includes a brief caption regarding the list and a short quote from Operation Crossroads: The Atomic Tests at Bikini Atoll by Jonathan M. Weisgall.

The series consisted of two detonations, a low altitude test and a shallow water test. The series was intended to study the effects of nuclear weapons on warships, equipment, and material.
Staff Sergeant Loren L. Parmelee participated in Operation Crossroads, including serving as engineer on the Douglas C-54 Skymaster (A/C No. 9122) that carried official observers during the first detonation (Able) on July 1, 1946.

From 1949 until 1988, Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) was a United States airline headquartered in San Diego, California. Founded by Kenneth Friedkin, PSA was the first large discount airline in the United States. PSA was initially operated as an intrastate airline in California, but expanded to other western states cities, as well as to several cities in Mexico, after the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. PSA eventually merged into USAir. PSA's corporate culture was known for its humor and friendliness; the airline's slogan was "The World's Friendliest Airline," and its trademark was a smile painted on the nose of each plane while its accompanying advertising campaign employed the phase, "Catch Our Smile."

Herbert A. Hazen was a member of the Air Technical Intelligence branch of the US Army Air Corps during World War II. Hazen was sent to Germany to investigate and recover interesting German aeronautical technology. This collection consists of approximately 0.5 cubic feet of material relating to Herbert A. Hazen's military career during World War II, including photographs, news clippings, ephemera, correspondence, a diary, and humorous poems and other writings by Hazen and his fellow service members.

This collection consists of approximately 0.5 cubic feet of material relating to Herbert A. Hazen's military career during World War II, including photographs, news clippings, ephemera, correspondence, a diary, and humorous poems and other writings by Hazen and his fellow service members. The photographs include images of Hazen, the Lippisch DM-1 in Germany and in the United States, test pilot Hans Zacher, and views of various military facilities and operations as well as bombing damage in Europe. Hazen's diary has entries from 1943 to 1945 and includes mention of the Horten IX (Ho 8-229, "Go 229"). Most of the ephemera in the collection is from Paris and includes a booklet of picture post cards, a travel guide with fold-out maps, and a program from the Folies Bergère. The collection also includes pocket German to English and English to German dictionaries.

Biographical / Historical:
Herbert A. Hazen was a member of the Air Technical Intelligence branch of the US Army Air Corps during World War II. Hazen was sent to Germany to investigate and recover interesting German aeronautical technology. Arriving in Germany in 1945, he was assigned to recover an experimental aircraft, the Lippisch DM-1 delta wing glider (now in the National Air and Space Museum's artifact collection). The glider was still under construction at Prien am Chiemsee near Munich, and Hazen lived there for some months. He befriended local craftspeople and oversaw their work to complete the glider, and then to build a special crate to hold the glider during shipment to the United States. Once the Lippisch DM-1 arrived in the United States, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) engineers tested the glider in the wind tunnel at the Langley Research Center making it the first piloted delta wing aircraft built to undergo flight tests. Although the DM-1 never flew, information gained from its testing led to the successful design, construction, and flight testing of the Convair XF-92A, which was the first delta wing aircraft to fly.

This collection contains pilot's licenses issued in the early 20th century. It includes licenses from various nations such as Canada, France, Italy, and the United States.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a variety of different types of pilots' licenses issued by civilian, government, and military organizations dating from 1911 to 1948. Licenses certified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) form most of the licenses issued by private organizations. Four founding clubs of FAI - Aero Club D'Italia, the Aero Club of America, the Aéro-Club de France, and the Royal Aero Club - are featured. The United States Navy, US Army Air Corps, and one item from the Canadian Air Force represent the military licenses in the collection. Licenses issued by the United State Department of Commerce form a large portion of licenses issued by governments.
Other forms of personal identification were discovered with many of the pilots' licenses in this collection. Examples of these items include a driver's license, a firearms license, aviation membership cards, and business cards.

Biographical / Historical:
Prior to 1926, pilots in the United States were not required to have any documentation or certification to operate an aircraft. To demonstrate ability and credibility, private organizations as well as military agencies issued their own licenses. These early licenses were available for different aircrafts across various disciplines and served to allow individuals to participate in aeronautic events endorsed by civil organizations.
A prominent international organization, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), supplied licenses to aviators around the world. Founded in 1905, FAI formed through the collaboration of aviation clubs from eight countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.
Pilots' licenses became a requirement after the Air Commerce Act of 1926, which promoted the improvement and maintenance of safety standards in air commerce. With a variety of different examples of pilots' licenses, the collection provides insight into the types of documentation issued to military and civilian pilots during the first half of the twentieth century.

This collection consists of approximately 0.35 cubic feet of banquet programs, menus, and similar items from aviation-themed events. Some are from events honoring individual pilots such as Charles Lindbergh, Richard Byrd, the Wright Brothers, and Amelia Earhart, and some are from events held by organizations including the Aero Club of America, the Early Birds of Aviation, the Manufacturers Aircraft Association, and the 31st Division Air Corps of the Alabama National Guard. Additional programs relate to specific events including the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, various air racing events and record setting flights, memorial dedications, and air route inaugurations.

Biographical / Historical:
During the early flight period, World War I, and on into the 1920s and 1930s, numerous famous flights by pioneering pilots represented the cultural acceptance of the airplane from an entertaining novelty into an instrument of commerce, a weapon of war, and a vehicle for spectacle. In response, there emerged a new form of technological enthusiasm called "air-mindedness." To be airminded meant the zealous support of aviation to bring about the next great era in human civilization, which many people called the "Air Age." With such a great interest in aviation, many of the pilots during this era were treated as celebrities whose activities were followed with interest by the press as well as the public. Pilots making trailblazing flights were often fêted with parades, banquets,and other events in order to celebrate their achievements, and many aviation events were similarly celebrated. Also during this time period, numerous aviation-related societies and clubs were formed and their members would meet for dinners and other social occasions.

This collection provides extensive documentation on the flying career of Paul R. Stockton from his entry into the New York Air National Guard through his service in France and Germany and eventual discharge in 1919. Included in this collection is documentation of the activies, personnel and equipment of Stockton's squadron, as well as are excellent aerial photographs of airplanes and before and after photographs of target areas. Many of the photographs show Marie, the Belgian police dog Stockton raised during the war. (Marie later appeared in motion pictures with Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino and others). One image is purportedly from one of the aircraft of Baron von Richtofen's "Flying Circus." Also included in this scrapbook are certificates of Stockton's appointments to corporal and to 1st lieutenant, hotel menus, copies of leaflets dropped by US aviators behind the German lines, examples of European currency, train and bus tickets, fabric swatches from aircraft, Stockton's pilot license and other such ephemera.
Biographical / Historical:
Paul R. Stockton (1880-1962) enlisted in the Signal Corps from 1906-1909 and served in Cuba and Puerto Rico. He made his first flight in 1916 as a member of the First Aero Company, New York State National Guard at Mineola, New York. In 1917 Stockton was ordered overseas and served as the Commanding Officer of the 12th Aero Squadron of the American Expeditionary Forces. Stockton was discharged in 1919, and was later a member of the Early Birds.

Three pilot licenses issued by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), member of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), to Mary B. C. Quinn. Each item also includes the signature of Orville Wright, Chairman of NAA.
Aviator's Certificate no. 7580 issued on 1 July 1930 and the 1930 Sporting License no. 458 include a small photograph of Quinn. The 1931 Sporting License no. 210 contains adhesive residue from a possibly removed or missing photograph.

The Mary E. "Mother" Tusch Collection reflects her interest in aviation. It consists of 12 boxes that contain photography, family documentation, news clippings and scrapbooks.

The Mary E. "Mother" Tusch Collection reflects her interest in aviation. It consists of 12 boxes that contain photography, family documentation, news clippings and scrapbooks. There are formal group and individual photographs as well as informal personal photographs of servicemen whom she had befriended and images signed by such famous aviators as Ruth Law and Earle Ovington. The collection contains photographs of the wallpaper from her Berkeley home which was signed by such aviation notables as Charles Lindbergh and Edward Rickenbacker. There are four scrapbooks that relate to her aviator friends and a fifth on World War I which includes photographs of trench warfare presented to "Mother" Tusch by John Pierson. This collection also contains photographs of "Mother" Tusch and her home; an inventory listing the aviation holdings of her home; guest books recording visitors to The Hangar, Shrine of the Air; and newspaper articles, museum plans, and correspondence relating to Tusch donating her collection to the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution.
"Mother" Tusch carried on correspondence with many of her aviator friends. One of these men, Bill Schneider, sent her a piece of what he claimed was the wreckage of Zeppelin LZ 129 "Hindenburg". The object and a photograph of Schneider and his correspondence to Tusch have been transferred to the Aeronautics Department of the National Air and Space Museum. Photocopies of these materials can be found in Box 7, Folder 3 of this collection.

Biographical/Historical note:
Mary E. Tusch (1875-1960) was a great supporter of aviation and pilots. She lived across the street from the United States School of Military Aeronautics on the University of California's Berkeley Campus during World War I. She invited the young aviators to her home and became like a second mother to many of them. They nicknamed her "Mother Tusch" and her house became known as The Hangar, Shrine of the Air. Tusch was actively interested in aviation as well as those people associated with aeronautics, and her home reflected her love of aviation. She avidly collected aviation material including artifacts, photographs, and autographs from the aviators. She invited many of the aviators who visited her home to sign the wallpaper.
This collection came to the National Air and Space Museum partially as a result of family ties. Mrs. Tusch's daughter, Irene, married National Air Space Museum curator, Paul E. Garber, in the early 1950s.
