Place:
United States of America -- New York -- Westchester County -- Greenburgh -- Dobbs Ferry
General:
For this site adjacent to woodlands Lois W. Poinier designed a stone stairway leading down from a porch to a grassy area. At the foot of the stairs a stone wall featured a fountain and fish pond accented by a sculpture of a cherub. A flagstone patio by the lawn was separated from it by a low stone wall. Surrounding the lawn was a garden border featuring azaleas, a dogwood, and other shrubs, providing a boundary between the house and the trees beyond. The property was probably located on Sherman Avenue.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer) and Harriet Herter (probable former owner). Although Poinier's records refer to a "Dr." Herter and wife as the project clients, his name has not been determined.

Before and after images document this multi-faceted design and installation project dating between about 1956 and 1960. One part of Lois W. Poinier's work involved creation of three levels of grass terracing with a stone retaining wall and stairs. Providing a space for outdoor living, the terraces were accented by azaleas and included one of Poinier's signature fountains. A more significant reshaping of the site resulted in the construction of a swimming pool carved into the hillside. Additional retaining walls and dramatic stone stairs were constructed and the remaining hillside above the pool was planted with naturalized daffodils and shrubs. Utilizing a natural rock outcropping near the pool as a backdrop Poinier created yet another garden area of low plantings, lawn, and a sculpture of a childlike Diana with bow and arrow and squirrel. One image shows the front of the house in spring.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, circa 1956-1960) and Mrs. William Hunter (former owner).

This project began with the removal of a hedge separating a swimming pool from the house, the latter being on a slightly higher level. The hedge was replaced with a lawn leading up to a multi-level terrace. Brick walls and garden borders separated the lawn from the two terraces, while a flagstone path connected the terrace area to the pool. Before and after images are included.

This project involved creation of a flagstone patio, starting with removal of overgrown yews and hedges. The patio incorporated a fountain and small pool, azalea borders, and views across a lawn to the surrounding trees. A large tree adjacent to the fountain and pool was removed several years after completion of the project, casting the entire patio into direct sun. Images cover the period 1966-1977 and show the evolution of the site.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, ca. 1966) and Amos Barr and Leola Elizabeth Conroy Hostetter (former owners).
