Historical Note:
Since 1968, the Anacostia Community Museum's staff photographers have created a visual record of life in contemporary urban communities, including documentary photography of residents and their activities, neighborhood events and landmarks, foodways, festivals, and public spaces.

Photographs in this collection were taken by Susana Raab who has worked at the Anacostia Community Museum from 2010-2019 and also maintains a personal practice.
Historical:

Scope and Contents note:
The collection includes photographs of excavations and artifacts relating to Stearns' archeological work in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. There are also some sketches of artifacts and excavation sites, as well as notes on pictured artifacts. One photo album relates to Stearns' work in Florida, while the other contains photographs of various sites in Maryland, including Conowingo.

The collection relates to work in Sussex County in Delaware; the District of Columbia; Bay, Collier, Flagler, Franklin, St. Johnʹs, St. Lucie, and Volusia counties in Florida, Glynn County in Georgia; Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince Georges, Queen Anneʹs, and St. Maryʹs counties in Maryland; Horry County in South Carolina; and Loudon and Page counties in Virginia.
Biographical/Historical note:
Richard E. Stearns (1902-1969) was a commercial photographer and amateur archeologist of Maryland's prehistory. He was known for his photographic documentation, particularly of sites and specimens, most notably at Conowingo, a large village site on the Susquehanna River. In the 1930s, he became a curator for the Department of Archeology of the Natural History Society of Maryland, a position he held for over thirty years. In the 1940s, Stearns published Nicholas Yinger's investigations of the Hughes site, as well as his own investigations of sites in Maryland.

Scope and Contents note:
Photographs of geologic features and the natural environment of the American West, Alaska, and Mexico, most of which were created during government surveys and the expansion of railroads during the 1800s. There are also photographs collected and made by individuals who worked or traveled in the west. Depicted locales include Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and Wyoming, and there are some additional images of artifacts, artwork, and portraits. Photographers represented include William Henry Jackson, John K. Hillers, Timothy H. O'Sullivan, E. O. Beaman, James Fennemore, William Bell, and other professional and amateur photographers.

Summary:
This collection contains 6 snapshot photographs depicting Pikuni Blackfeet (Piegan) Chiefs participating in the the Fair of the Iron Horse held at Halethorpe, Baltimore County, Maryland in 1927.The photographs in this collection were owned by Bertha Gritzner, who attended the fair and may depicted in the images.
Scope and Contents:
This collection contains 6 snapshot gelatin silver prints depicting scenes at the Fair of the Iron Horse held at Halethorpe, Baltimore County, Maryland. The Fair was held from September 24 to October 8, 1927 in honor of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's centennial. The photographs depict Pikuni Blackfeet (Piegan) Chiefs posing at the fair along with unidentified individuals. The photographs were originally owned by Bertha Gritzner, who may be depicted in the photographs.

Chief Two Guns White Calf is featured in two photographs.

Biographical / Historical:
The Fair of the Iron Horse celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Held in Halethorpe, Baltimore County, Maryland from September 24 to October 8, 1927, the Fair was advertised as a miniature World's Fair and featured a fairground, pageant, and exhibits. Members of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana traveled to Maryland for the Fair and marched in the pageant highlighting the history of inland transportation.

The photographs in this collection were owned by Bertha Gritzner, who attended the fair and may depicted in the images. The photographs were donated by her granddaughter Jean Stitzel in 2001.
