General:
Point No Point is located in rural Mason, Tennessee. Established in 1833, the 110-acre property features a working farm, woodlands, and a large display of naturalized spring bulbs.

Entering the property, a drive leads through the open farmland to the homeplace. The fields are rotated seasonally with sunflowers and winter wheat. The house is surrounded by a hardwood grove providing protection from the harsh summer sun.

The front of the house faces a semicircle of woodlands that open into a field of native grasses. Mature azaleas were planted to accentuate the boxwoods that border the house. From the front porch, there is a view of large magnolias, dogwoods, red buds and oak trees. In early spring, ground is covered in a sea of naturalized jonquils, daffodils, and snowdrops. By summer, the view shifts to a flower bed of daylilies, tulips, zinnias, and other annuals.

The brick Colonial Revival style house was constructed in 1910.

Scope and Contents:
28 digital images (2015-2022) and 1 file folder.
General:
A blank canvas of about 100 acres with a woodlot, fields, big views and a stream that would be dammed to create a small swimming pond were purchased in 1972. The house designed by the owner, was built in 1974-1975 on a southwest facing slope that had maximum views; beginning in 1976 the garden was built in an English country design. Trees and shrubs were planted to define garden spaces and rooms and to shade the southwest facing terrace. A tall native stone retaining wall, a planting bed outlined with landscape timbers and eventually steps separate the flower beds surrounding the house from the slippery slope. A lawn was seeded on a flat area north of the house. The property's slopes mandated additional retaining walls for perennial beds. Shrubs and trees were planted on the north side to mitigate the impact of winter winds. Two barns and a shed were added and an additional house for the owners' daughter was built.

The owner, a professional landscape designer, determined that her garden style at home would be loose and informal: lushly planted beds with flowers to fill the house and a large vegetable garden. Unsightly areas such as the driveway and the compost were screened with shrubs and tall perennials including lilacs, baptisias, boltonia, and the tallest day lilies, with ninebark concealing the compost. A pollarded English elm in the driveway garden adds color and texture. The first square vegetable plot south of the lawn clashed with curving flower beds so eventually was dismantled, and new vegetable beds were dug beyond the pine trees that were the garden's original frame. More perennial flower beds were added in the newly available space, adding ornamental grasses and shrubs that require less maintenance. The early perennial beds were planted with day lilies, peonies and Siberian iris that were propagated and planted in new beds. Different varieties and more species and spring ephemerals were added over the years and the beds were kept fertile with weed-free manure. Although there is no strict planting scheme the colors yellow, purple and blue recur in all the flower beds, with spots of red from crab apples and cranberries.

There are varied plantings on each side of the house and outside the gray barn walls. The terrace is paved with irregular native stones with creeping thyme and moss growing in the crevices. On the western side facing the Green Mountains the flower border has short perennials and annuals with a stone-bordered water basin and jet as features. Pots of tuberous begonias and other tender plants line the broad steps up to the house. The flower bed on the south side is planted with day lilies, phlox, false indigo and bearded iris, and a shrubby, spiny yellow rose spills over the tall native stone retaining wall. The barn's flower beds feature warm colors including false sunflower, lady's mantle, coreopsis and clematis. Yellow sundrops contrast with the red berries of high bush cranberry and a Preston lilac marks the transition to a raspberry patch.

Surrounding the garden room there are densely planted borders with varieties of aster, day lilies, peonies, Siberian iris and phlox. Other plants include a white flowering crab apple, a mountain ash-pear hybrid, fothergilla, rugose rose, Korean viburnum, lavender flowered culver's root and yellow hollyhock. In the shade of fifty-year-old white pines are planted false spirea, plantain lily, Japanese spikenard, black-eyed Susan, Jacob's ladder and more day lilies and iris. Vegetables are planted in raised beds with small fruit nearby, including blueberries, currants, raspberries and gooseberries. An allée of lilac and viburnum lead the way to the daughter's house. A shrubbery that acts as a windbreak and visual barrier includes yellow-leaved ninebark, dwarf willow, flowering quince, cinquefoil, and hydrangea.

The retaining walls below the terrace are planted with ninebark, white rugose rose, elderberry, baptisia, tall ornamental grasses, Siberian iris, peonies and phlox. An air-conditioning unit is screened by panicle hydrangea and tall phlox varieties. There is a grapevine climbing to an upper deck. In every direction one finds lush plantings with texture, color and scent from familiar and unusual varieties of species and enough repetition to unify all the beds.

Persons associated with the garden's design: Suzanne R. Dworsky (landscape architect, 1975- ).

Nash-Hooper House Garden (Hillsborough, North Carolina)
Scope and Contents:
12 digital images and 1 folder.
General:
The historic Piedmont style house was built in 1772, with 27 different owners over the years: first Revolutionary War hero General Francis Nash, followed by William Hooper, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The third owner was William Alexander Graham, an influential politician who held many offices including governor of North Carolina. The house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1972 which meant the current owners could make only approved changes to the property they purchased in 1998. Their solution was to build a garage disguised as a carriage house with a breezeway connecting to the house. In the space between the buildings there is an enclosed formal kitchen garden, an herb garden, an arbor, and herbaceous perennials with a walkway.

The owners collect 18th and 19th century furniture, 19th century Hudson River school paintings, North Carolina pottery and 21 historic weathervanes that are placed around the 2.44 acre grounds. A pecan tree estimated to be 200 or more years old is a surviving historic tree while other trees and roses have been lost. Newer plantings include 28 Japanese maples, hosta, phlox, columbine, pulmonary, anemones, day lilies, astilbe, hellebores, lily of the valley, camellias and yaupon holly. There is a woodland garden around the periphery of the property with specimen trees. Colonial flagstones that formed a road for General Cornwallis have been salvaged by residents of the town and some of them pave a seating area under a grape arbor covered with old vines. A copper roof made circa 1800 tops a well house built by the owners.

Persons associated with the garden's design: Taimi Anderson (landscape architect, 2004).

General:
In 1964 eight acres of woodlands overlooking Cold Spring Harbor of the Long Island Sound were purchased with the intention of building a "house surrounded by a garden". The bones of their garden were laid out with professional help, and the house was built on the same plane as a mature red oak tree. Original trees and shrubs were retained as much as possible. These included laurel, arbutus, shad blow, holly, dogwood and American chestnut. Around the house and along pathways into the woods flowering trees and shrubs including rhododendron, azalea, camellia, and magnolia were planted. The woodlands were enlarged when five additional acres were added to the property and the gardens enlarged with specimens and cuttings from neighbors. Plants were "rescued from the bulldozer" as surrounding estates were broken up for redevelopment. Springtime bloom is considered the peak season although the gardens continue to thrive all year, with winter jasmine planted along steps to the pool. There is good drainage and glacial till soil although the property slopes in three directions.

His and her greenhouses were added to the house for orchids, seed propagation, and plant storage in winter. A glass garden room built over a terrace has a small pond with a bubbling fountain and many potted plants making a year-round garden within the house. An English oak planted at the top of the driveway was grown from an acorn imported from a family estate.

Dogwood declined due to extreme acidity while 30-foot-tall American chestnut were lost to the chestnut blight. Currently deer predation is a problem despite the addition of a seven-foot fence.

Persons associated with the garden's design: Jane Webel, Landscape Architect (1964); Jan Pratt, horticulturist and gardener.

Grafton is located in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Established in 1903, the 13 acre property features a formal garden designed by Landscape Architect Martha Brookes Hutcheson. Sited above a private beach, Grafton offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, nearby islands, and Boston in the distance.
The formal garden is entered by stepping down through a hedge of Endless Summer hydrangeas flowering in front of the low stone wall. The garden is symmetrically laid out with two rectangular beds mirroring each other at the beginning and repeated at the end of the garden.  There are four L-shaped beds facing each other for a total of eight beds.  Additional beds are along the outer perimeter of these beds. The first two rectangle beds are planted with shrub roses from David Austin. Echinacea, Salvia, and geraniums encircle the roses providing color and scent.   Four L-shaped beds surround you with phlox, peonies, Euphorbia, Helenium, Asters, Monarda, daylilies, iris, dahlias and hostas.  Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' provides a focal point and structure in the four corners of the main beds and Hibiscus syriacus 'Red Heart' added in the middle of the same beds. Color and height changing as the season progresses.
At the far end of the garden there is a semi-circular pond. It is approached through two rectangular beds which are full of Japanese tree peonies augmented with anemone. The pond is edged in granite, planted with water lilies and lotus, and backed by a yew hedge that is trimmed to a height of the arbor wall. A small lead statue of a boy which is placed on top of a rock in the middle and a trickle of water flows underneath.  Behind the pond is a semi-circular arbor with grape vines draping over the timber structure designed by Martha Brookes Hutcheson in 1902.  Long beds planted along the high wall of the garden hold English roses with clematis and cherry trees pruned against the wall.  Peonies, crocosmia, salvia and dahlias combine to enhance this area and tie the garden together.
Down the stairs past the tree peony bed, there is a border of new Stewartia pseudocamelia.  The border is also planted with holly, Weigela, peony, goat's beard, clematis, and hydrangea. A carpet of sweet woodruff lightens the space and is combined with the dropping magnolia flowers.  Another bed is filled with hydrangea, Weigela, and fothergilla shrubs.  A bird bath original to the property was sited across from the path between the tree peony beds and the back planting beds.
Toward the ocean between two shrub borders, a new hedge of Weigela has been planted along the whole backside of these two beds creating a visual ending of the formal garden where two old iron chairs and a wellhead are located. A long bed is planted with clipped Deutzias and underplanted with hostas.  A shrub rose is planted in the middle of the hedge forming a backdrop for the chairs. Behind all is a stone wall containing the garden, and in the background, the sea. The seating area is in line with a sundial placed along the long border and the opposite exterior garden wall.  To the left, the wall continues and then ends with some unclipped Deutzias forming an archway with hostas planted underneath.  On the right the garden becomes informal with cranberry Viburnums planted in a swath with steps leading down to a grass landing area and more steps leading to the house, the main lawn, or the beach.
The current Regency style house, designed by Lincoln Boyden Jr., was constructed in the 1940s to replace a larger 55-room mansion designed by Herbert D. Hale in 1900.
Persons associated with the garden's design: Martha Brooks Hutcheson (landscape designer, 1902-1910), Herbert D. Hale (architect, 1900-1905), Fletcher Steele (landscape architect, 1935), Lincoln Boyden Jr. (architect, 1941), Umberto Innocenti (landscape architect, 1942), Jason Arnold (gardener, 1978-1983), Denise King (gardener, 1984-1987), Jan Hendryck (gardener, 1988-1995), Elizabeth R. General:
The five acre property on a steep hillside had been landscaped in the 1930's by Fletcher Steele who divided the upper portions near the house into horizontal terraces, including a lawn terrace for entertaining reached down a few stone steps, a veranda with a shaded loggia behind and to the side of the house, a wisteria covered pergola that disguised the service area, a sunken garden, and a lily pond with one side tucked into the rocky terrain. In 1967 Catherine Hull found shallow soil, a rock ledge and woodlands overgrown with invasive vines along with the strong lines of the hardscape. Most of that hardscape was retained but plans for an English style flower garden were scrapped and the gardener/owner studied and planted rock garden borders with alpines and woodland gardens with shade-loving perennials and shrubs. The retaining wall on the lawn terrace was dismantled and replaced with tufa, a porous volcanic rock, packed with peat and compost, then planted with gentian, alyssum, aquilegia, anemone, dianthus, papaver and other favorites creating a 50-foot long border. A second large bed was planted in the sunken terrace below a wall. Woodland canopies on the approach to the house and on the steep slope below were raised and lightened with under plantings of small bulbs including cyclamen and spring flowering trees and shrubs. Steele's lily pond was cleared of plants and rechristened as a reflecting pool for the plantings along the edges.

A statue of Neptune from the Steele garden remained and looked over the pond and nearby Massachusetts Bay. Around a key outcrop Hull planted mugho pine, juniper, cotoneaster and European ginger. The rock outcrops alongside the reflecting pool were planted with Japanese maples, petasites, hosta and primroses for spring bloom. There was a kitchen garden and composting facility with separate bins for horse and cow manure, seaweed mulch and oak leaves. While working on her gardens for 30 years Catherine Hull became an authority on alpine plant growing and propagation, lectured and belonged to many gardening societies including The American Rock Garden Society.

Persons associated with the garden include: Henry L. and Ida A. Higginson (former owners, -1896); Alice Weston Smith (d. 1903), Pauline W. Smith (former owners, 1896-1910); Anna Dwight Howard (former owner, 1910-1924); Caroline R. and William Hill (former owners, 1924-1931); Mary and William Kennard Kenly (former owners, 1933-1946); Katherine A. and Richard S. Scope and Contents:
47 digital images (2017-2018) and 1 file folder.
General:
Beginning in 1966 the owners worked with architect Walter Ramberg and landscape designer Kurt Bluemel to build a custom-designed modern house in woodland gardens on their seven acre portion of a larger family-owned estate. Once the site of a formal garden now their property has no straight lines with mature oak, maple and dogwood, 40 azaleas and boxwood from other family properties, and white pines planted to define the property line. Rhododendron from the formal garden were moved into the woods. Garden rooms on each side of the house, along the entrance driveway, outside the potting shed and around the swimming pool and fire pit have understory trees and shrubs, perennials, wildflowers or ephemerals partly shaded by mature trees. Japanese maples, bleeding heart, hellebores, and Virginia bluebells are some of the huge variety of plants in these partial shade garden rooms. Pathways and stairs are stone with custom iron hand-railing. There is a sunroom patch of lawn next to the house and lawn beyond the curving black-bottom swimming pool that leads to a tennis court. The fish pond, hexagonal potting shed and fire pit surrounded by a built-in circular bench were added over time along with whimsical metal sculptures including a blue tractor to celebrate a wedding anniversary.
Persons associated with the garden include: Morton Stewart and family (former owners, early 1900s- ); Clare and Van Stewart (owners, 1966- ); Walter Dodd Ramberg (architect, 1966-67); Kurt Bluemel (garden designer, 1967-1994).
