Original title reads, "One of the actual treks made in 1838 came right along the foothills of the mountains seen in the distance. The trekkers crossed the Vaal River and settled near Potchefstroom, a little to the north in Transvaal. Ina Van der Walt, 18, of Middleburg, a student at Potchefstroom University; and Carol Cameron, 18, of Cape Town, also a student at Potchefstroom University, wear costumes somewhat similar to those worn by voortrekker women. Youth leading the oxen is Koos du Plooy, studying for the ministry at Potchefstroom University. Man on horseback is Dries Yssel, 23, who is also studying for the ministry, and comes from Ventersdorp, Transvaal." [Elisofon field notes, August 1959-December 1959]

Original title reads, "One of the actual treks made in 1838 came right along the foothills of the mountains seen in the distance. The trekkers crossed the Vaal River and settled near Potchefstroom, a little to the north in Transvaal. Ina Van der Walt, 18, of Middleburg, a student at Potchefstroom University; and Carol Cameron, 18, of Cape Town, also a student at Potchefstroom University, wear costumes somewhat similar to those worn by voortrekker women. Youth leading the oxen is Koos du Plooy, studying for the ministry at Potchefstroom University. Man on horseback is Dries Yssel, 23, who is also studying for the ministry, and comes from Ventersdorp, Transvaal." [Elisofon field notes, August 1959-December 1959]
This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
