Scope and Contents:
The photograph depicts house in the form of a ship, with two surimposed arcade galleries, built in 1771 by the half-caste Victoria Abis. In 1873, it housed the judiciary and the following year, the civilian prison. In 1954, the French Institute of Black Africa, opened the first historical museum there. Presently, it is the office of the Gorée-Almadies Memorial Foundation. During his trip to Senegal, Elisofon visited Dakar, its surroundings as well as Gorée (island). This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
