Scope and Contents:
MS 2095-a Copy of Diccionario de Motul, maya español, published Motul, Mexico (?) between 1577 and 1630, held by John Carter Brown Library. Edited. Typed, as if for publication.

Translation of part of copyist's note (name not given), pages 15-20 of typescript: "This work has been copied from the manuscript of John Carter Brown, in Providence, R. I. There are two volumes in small quarto, the first containing the part Maya-Spanish in 465 [sic] pages, and the second the part Spanish-Maya in 263 [sic] pages, of which 32 [sic] are lacking. It has no title, nor name of the author, nor date. The first leaf of the second part is headed: Vocabulario en Lengua de Maya. The paper and writing are of the 17th to 18th centuries. From various passages it is inferred that the author was Spanish, or at least that he knew Madrid (page 89); that he was a priest, since a large number of the explicative examples refer to the Christian doctrine and to the interrogatives of the confessional; that he was of the Franciscan Brotherhood, since he professes great devotion to St Francis (pages 456, 461, and others); that he wrote his work probably in the convent of Motul, which was founded in 1567, which was five leagues from Conkal, and eight from Merida (pages 33 and 985)...In this copy the Arabic numerals I, and II refer to the two volumes mentioned, but the figures III indicate supplementary articles bound together by the copyist in separate volume with a pagination corresponding with that of this copy...."

Scope and Contents:
This is the only Manuscript in the files that could conceivably be the Tehuelche vocabulary that J. B. Hatcher collected in Patagonia, 1898. However, it is not in a printed "Schedule" and Hatcher, in his letter of November 5, 1897 to McGee, acknowledges receipt of "blank book for work on Philology among Indians." I would expect this to refer to one of Powell's printed schedules, not an ordinary notebook. A less concrete reason for doubting that these are Hatcher vocabularies is that the notebooks and the handwriting appear to be "earlier" than Hatcher's time. The handwriting is not Hatcher's and it seems unlikely that his vocabularies would have been transcribed in a hand like this. MCB, 3/60.
