This collection consists of 38 cases of glass slides taken by Edgar Mix. The slides reflect aeronautical themes, both lighter- and heavier-than-air subjects from the early 1900s. Subjects photographed by Mix include the Grand Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne (Reims, France), Camp d'Auvours and various aeronautical events taking place in the vicinity of Paris during 1910 and 1911. Also included are images of Mix himself and what appear to be images of his family.
Biographical / Historical:
Edgar W. Mix [1866-1911] was an internationally renowned early balloonist and the second American to win the Gordon Bennett Balloon Race. This he accomplished on October 6, 1909, flying from Zurich, Switzerland to land near Warsaw, Poland.

This collection consists of one CD containing sixty-nine high-resolution image scans produced by Chrome Photographic Services. These images were scanned from the collection of Gérard Pommier and the images relate to the aviation careers of Edouard and Charles Nieuport. This collection also contains one cd of 356 low-resolution image scans and photocopies of photographs and French publications.
Biographical / Historical:
Edouard Nieuport (1875-1911) was a French engineer and designer who first worked with motorcycles and automobiles before turning to aircraft. Nieuport's first aircraft was built in 1908, and from this design came the famous Nieuport fighters, which were used by virtually all of the Allied nations during World War I. Nieuport also set world speed records in 1911, before his death later that year when he crashed while demonstrating a fighter to the military. Nieuport's brother, Charles (d. 1913), was also a pilot.

Scope and Contents:
This collection includes early ballooning material as well as photographs of early 20th century French pilots. The ballooning material includes material from Jean-Pierre Blanchard, Joseph Montgolfier and Eugene and Louis Godard. The early photographs include the following aviators: Louis Blériot, and Jules Védrines. The following types of material are included: photographs, newspaper clippings, postcards, and books.

Georges Naudet (June 9, 1900 - May 22, 1983) was a French businessman who was passionately interested in the early history of ballooning and aviation. An amateur in the field of aviation history, he became an avid collector and author.

This collection consists of 163 photographs, collected by Whitman, covering early aviation activities in predominantly the United States and France. Aircraft manufacturers represented include: Wright, Curtiss, Bell, Bleriot, Antoinette, Deperdussin, Farman, Voisin, and other American, French, and British designers of the period 1909-1911. The following events are represented: 1909, 1910 Grande Semaines d'Aviation, 1910 Quinzaine de la Baie de la Seine, 1909 meet at Blackpool England and the 1910 meets at Belmont Part Long Island, Nice and other locations. Flights represented include: Bleriot's Channel flight, Latham's flight over San Francisco and flights in and around New York and Paris. Aviators represented include: the Wright Brothers, Henry Farman, Louis Bleriot, Hubert Latham, Glenn Curtiss, Louis Paulhan, and other French and American pilots.

Biographical / Historical:
Roger B. Whitman was a prominent photographer who maintained a lifetime love of aviation. During World War I he was in the Air Service and established the first school of aerial photography. Whitman was later the Associate Editor of the American 'Country Life.'
