This collection contains three scrapbooks and four certificates relating to Edwin C. Parsons' aviation career.
Scope and Contents:
This collection contains three scrapbooks and four certificates relating to Edwin C. Parsons' aviation career. The three scrapbooks include photos, news clippings, and mementos from Edwin C. Parsons' expatriate years, 1914-1924. Included in the albums are photos of Parsons' service in France with the Lafayette Escadrille and Les Cigognes squadron, his repatriation certificate, French military citations, and his memoir Fighting Men of the Sky, published in 40 installments weekly beginning 24 March 1918. Also included are news clippings of Parsons' exploits during his varied career.
Arrangement:
This collection is arranged by type of material; the scrapbooks are in original order and the loose items are housed at the end of the collection.
Biographical / Historical:
Rear Admiral Edwin C. Parsons (1892-1968) had a varied aviation career, serving in two World Wars. Parsons graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1910 and after attending the University of Pennsylvania, he moved to California where he learned to fly at Dominguez Field. Parsons was commissioned with the Mexican Aviation Corps in 1914 where he trained Pancho Villa's pilots. In 1915, he worked his way to Europe where he joined the Lafayette Escadrille, and was credited with eight kills, making him an ace. From 1920 until 1923, Parsons was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He then went to Hollywood where he became a script writer and technical advisor, working on such films as Wings, Dawn Patrol, and The Great Adventure. In 1934 he joined the Naval Reserve where he advanced to the rank of Rear Admiral. During World War II Parsons served on an aircraft carrier and took part in amphibious landings in the South Pacific. He retired from the service in 1954.

This collection consists of 46 polaroid photographs, 412 negatives and 1,466 prints taken by George Meese from the mid-1920s until the late 1930s. Summary:
This collection consists of a photo album, a memoir, memorabilia, and military records and certificates pertaining to John H. Rogers and his service with the 95th Aero Squadron during World War I.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a nine by eleven inch photo album containing snapshots of the aircraft, including SPAD XIII (S.13) and Nieuport (France) 28; airfields; and personnel of the 95th Aero Squadron. The collection also contains a twenty-one page typewritten 1969 memoir by John Rogers, and a folder entitled, "World War I Memories of John H. Rogers, 1916-1918." This folder contains memorabilia including a program for dedication of the James Ely Miller Field, a 1971 letter from Eddie Rickenbacker to the widow of John Rogers, Rogers' military records and certificates, a First Reserve Aero Squadron Association newsletter, postcards and snapshots.

Biographical / Historical:
The 95th Aero Squadron, organized on August 20th, 1917, and demobilized on March 18th, 1919, was part of the 1st Pursuit Organization stationed in France on the Western Front during World War I. The squadron was assigned as a Day Pursuit (Fighter) Squadron and was the first American squadron to fly in combat, doing so on March 8th, 1918. The 95th Aero Squadron shot down 35 enemy aircraft and 12 observation balloons, participating in the following military campaigns: Champagne-Marne Defensive, Aisne-Marne Offensive, St. Mihiel Offensive and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Among the squadron's pilots were six air aces and Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt.
John H. Rogers (d. 1971) was a mechanic for the 95th Aero Squadron during World War I. Rogers was working for the Oldsmobile Motor Company in New York City as a mechanic in the Spring of 1917 when he quit his job and enlisted. On June 4, 1917, he was ordered to appear for duty. He trained as a solider at Wright Martin Flying Field in Mineola, New York, and in August of 1917 he sailed to France as part of the 2nd Reserve. In January 1918, he reported to the 95th Aero Squadron. He was Sergeant First Class and later promoted to Master Electrician (Me.E.) On February 14, 1919, he sailed back from France, arriving in New York on March 3, 1919, and was discharged from the Signal Corps Aviation Station in Mineola. After the war he worked as a mechanic in the garage business.

This collection, a part of the larger A. M. Phillips collection, contains 76 photographs of German World War I pilots. The photographs are of various sizes and on various types of paper. Of these, 73 are black and white and 3 are sepia toned. Most have caption information on the reverse.
Biographical / Historical:
A collection of approximately 10,000 World War I photographs was assembled from various sources by Mr. A. M. Phillips, who contacted NASM in December 1963 to offer the collection for sale. NASM obtained a gift from the Shell Companies Foundation, Inc. in May, 1964 in the amount of {dollar}5,000 to purchase the collection. NASM received the collection on August 14, 1964.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two annual reports, two photograph albums, and a set of microfilm of 26 scrapbooks. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings chronicling Rickenbacker's aviation career. The two photo albums are as follows: 'In Commemoration of the Dedication of the Rickenbacker Foundation,' and 'The Great Silver Fleet,' which features imagery from the 1941 Georgia crash. There are also two annual reports: United Aircraft and Transport Corporation First Annual Report to Stockholders,' 1929 and 'Central Airlines Annual Report, 1965.'
Biographical / Historical:
Edward Vernon Rickenbacker (1890-1973) had only a sixth grade education but became a leading aviation figure in both military and civilian circles. Rickenbacker was a fighter ace during World War I, where as a member of the 94th Aero Squadron he shot down 22 German aircraft and 4 observation balloons. He became a colonel in the Army Air Reserves and during WWII helped form the Military Air Transport Services. In the civilian sector, Rickenbacker worked at several airlines, including Fokker Aircraft Corporation and American Airways, before going to work at Eastern Airlines in 1934. In 1939 Rickenbacker became Eastern's president and chairman, positions he held until 1963.

This collection consists of four folders of correspondence and official papers generated during Wallace Peters's military service.
Biographical / Historical:
Lieutenant Heber Wallace Peters was a member of the American Flying Service in France during World War I. He received flying instruction in Tours and Chateauroux and completed his training in Issoudun, where he became a flight instructor himself. Attached to the 33rd Aero Squadron, he was stationed in Bordeaux for a time after the Armistice before returning to the States.

Scope and Contents:
This scrapbook consists of photographs of Sergeant Johnston, his fellow servicemen and a few aircraft (including a Junkers and the USS Akron). Most of the scrapbook commemorates personal events in Myriam Lahaurine Johnston's life, such as her relations with family and friends, her wedding to H. W. Johnston, the birth and childhood of their daughter, Miriam, their home in Ohio and the family's travels to such places as Biarritz, Nice, Paris and Washington, DC. Also included are signed photos from Richard Evelyn Byrd and Lily Pons, as well as a signed letter from the latter.
Biographical / Historical:
Myriam Lahaurine met the American Sergeant Major H. W. Johnston during his service with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I.

This collection consists of three scrapbooks which document the activities of 1st Lt. Richard T. Pilling and the personnel of the 1st Aero Squadron during 1917-1919. Aircraft seen in this collection include products of Albatros, Breuget, Bristol, Fokker, Nieuport, Sopwith, and SPAD. The scrapbooks also contain images of the British Rigid Airship R 34.

This scrapbook chronicles the experiences of Nelson Coon and depicts mostly unit personnel, with little coverage of aircraft.
Biographical / Historical:
The 58th Aero Squadron was organized at Kelly Field in August 1918; sent to Camp Morrison, VA in October; Brest, France in January 1918; and finally Lopcomb Corner Air Field in February 1918. The group was renamed the 470th Aero Construction Squadron, and departed Europe as soon as the war ended. One of the squadron's members was Nelson Coon.
