Dornier Do 17 Postcard

Extent:
0.05 Cubic feet (1 folder, 3.5 x 5.5 inch collotype post card)
Type:
Collection descriptions
Archival materials
Picture postcards
Date:
1940
Summary:
Collotype post card depicting two Dornier Do 17 aircraft in flight sent from Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Germany, to Oberer Graben, Germany; the card, addressed to Anton Schmid, carries a 6 pfennig postage stamp with a December 6, 1940, cancelation mark "Stadt der Reichsparteitage Nürnberg [City of the Nazi Party Rallies Nuremberg]."
Scope and Contents:
Collotype post card published by Kosmos Franckh-Verlag (Stuttgart) entitled "Flüg in Die Wolken [Flight in the Clouds] / Unfere Luftwaffe Kampfflugzeug Do 17 [Our Luftwaffe Fighter Plane]." The illustration is a heavily retouched composite photographic image of two Dornier Do 17 airplanes in flight through clouds. The near aircraft is Dornier Do 17 R V2 (r/n D-ATJU); the more distant aircraft (depicted without markings) may represent the only other R model built, Do 17 R V1 (r/n D-AEEE). The post card was sent December 6, 1940, by "Nesl" [sp?] from Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Germany, to Anton Schmid in Oberer Graben, Germany. The reverse of the post card, mailed inside Nazi Germany during World War II, carries a 6 pfennig postage stamp bearing a portrait of Paul von Hindenburg and the cancelation mark "Stadt der Reichsparteitage Nürnberg [City of the Nazi Party Rallies Nuremberg]." The handwritten message, addressed to "Herrn Anton Schmid, Gerberei, Illerstissen, Schwaben, Oberer Graben 56c" reads "Lieber Vater! Alles Gute zum Namenstag. Morgen schicke ich das Paket wieder ab. Viele Grüße von uns Allen [Translation: Dear father, All the best on your name day. Tomorrow I will send the package again. Many greetings from all of us"].
Arrangement:
Assigned NASM image number NASM-9A19786.
Biographical / Historical:
Initially designed in the mid-1930s by Dornier-Werke GmbH as a high-speed commercial transport aircraft for use by the German airline Lufthansa, the extremely slim fuselage of the twin-engine Dornier Do 17 (nicknamed the "Flying Pencil") proved impractical for use as a passenger airliner. The exceptional handling and performance of the aircraft caught the eye of the Luftwaffe, however, and the type was redesigned as a high-speed light bomber or long-range reconnaissance aircraft, with Do 17 E and F production models serving as combat aircraft during the Spanish Civil War (1936--1939). Several experimental models were produced to test various engines and bomber modifications. The Dornier Do 17 R V2 (r/n D-ATJU) pictured on this post card, powered by two 1,100 hp Daimler-Benz DB 601A engines, served as an engine testbed; the second Do 17 pictured may represent the only other R model built, Do 17 R V1 (r/n D-AEEE). Later production models, particularly the Do 17 Z, saw heavy service with the Luftwaffe in the early years of World War II.

US Army Air Force Japanese Propaganda Leaflet

Creator:
United States. Office of War Information  Search this
Extent:
0.05 Cubic feet (1 folder)
Type:
Collection descriptions
Archival materials
Leaflets
Biographies
Date:
1944
Summary:
Propaganda moved to the air during the Second World War. Leaflets bearing Japanese characters, like the one in this collection, were airdropped by US pilots in enemy-controlled territories of the Southwest Pacific with the intention to reduce the morale of their soldiers.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a 4 by 6.5 inch airborne propaganda leaflet issued by the United States in 1944 and dropped over the Japanese-held territories in New Guinea and the Philippines. This leaflet is written in a traditional Japanese writing system - used by the privileged class at this time - and attempted to discourage enemy soldiers. Also included in this collection is the biography of Second Lieutenant Hubert J. Frank, a Consolidated B-24 Liberator pilot with the 65th Bombing Squadron assigned to the 43rd Bombardment Group of the Fifth Air Force, who helped scattered hundreds of these leaflets.
Arrangement:
Collection is in original order.
Biographical / Historical:
Military aircrafts released leaflets, flyers, and other smaller paper items to promote agendas and persuade audiences. This distribution, usually scattered in the air over conflict zones, reached combatants and civilians. Often these materials were also dropped in conjunction with air strikes. In the Second World War, both the Allies and Axis utilized airborne leaflet propaganda as a method of psychological warfare to demoralize their enemy, undermine their authority, and induce surrender. In the Southwest Pacific theatre, the US pilots airdropped hundreds of propaganda leaflets over Japan as well as other territories controlled by the Japanese.

The WASP Binder: Pictures of Life and Training of the Women's Air Force Service Pilots Collection is arranged in its original order.
Biographical / Historical:
With the entry of the United States into World War II, many American women pilots longed to volunteer their skills to serve their country but were barred from flying for the US military due to their gender. Some American women pilots, including well-known racing pilot Jacqueline "Jackie" Cochran, had already offered their services to the British Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), ferrying aircraft from the manufacturers to and between air bases and freeing up male Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots for other duties. Cochran's experience with the ATA led her to lobby long and hard for a similar organization in the US. Initially, two organizations were formed to allow American women pilots to participate in the war effort. On September 10, 1942, the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), consisting of commercially licensed women pilots under the leadership of Nancy Harkness Love, was created as part of the US Army Air Corps' Air Transport Command. On November 16, 1942, a women pilot training program designed to supply pilots for the WAFS was begun under Cochran's leadership as the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD). Initially based at Howard Hughes Municipal Airport in Houston, Texas, the WFTD was soon moved to Avenger Field at Sweetwater, Texas. On August 5, 1943, the WAFS and the WFTD were merged to form the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), with Cochran as director of the WASP and its training division and Love as director of the ferrying division. Between November 17, 1942, and December 7, 1944, the 1,074 women who earned WASP wings flew 60 million miles for the US Army Air Corps. From light aircraft, the WASPs advanced quickly to fly every type of Air Corps aircraft in use at the time. Except for aerial gunnery and formation flying, these women received the same training as the male pilots. WASPs ferried planes, towed anti-aircraft artillery training targets, flew tracking, simulated bombing missions, performed radio control, flight tested aircraft, gave instrument instruction and performed many other duties. Their work allowed more men to participate in aviation combat roles.

Bernice Falk Haydu (1920-2021) was a member of WASP class 44-7. Known as Bee Falk at the time, she volunteered for the civilian Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in early 1944 because she loved flying and wanted to help the war effort. She trained for seven months at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, where she logged 210 hours in various aircraft. She went on to serve at Pecos Army Airfield as an engineering test pilot and a utility pilot before the WASP program was canceled in December 1944. After the war, she worked as a freelance flight instructor, ferry pilot, and later owned a Cessna dealership and flight school. Haydu served as president of the WASP alumni association, Order of the Fifinella, between 1975-78, spearheading efforts for recognition for the WASP. In 1977, the WASP were granted military veteran status. Haydu was one of three surviving WASP to stand beside President Obama in 2009 as he awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the WASP for their service during World War II.

Biographical / Historical:
Janice Christensen  (1913 – 1965) started taking flying lessons at the Waukegan (Illinois) Airport in 1942, where she was also an original member of the Waukegan Civil Air Patrol. By March 1943, Christensen had completed 90 hours of flying time and was selected to join the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASP). She left for training at Avenger Army Air Field in Sweetwater, Texas, graduating in class 43-W-5 on September 11, 1943. After graduation, Christensen was stationed at Romulus Army Air Field in Michigan until she returned to Avenger Field where she completed an advanced instrument flying course. She was then stationed at Cochran Army Air Field in Macon, Georgia, until the WASP program was disbanded in December 1944. After her WASP service, Christensen worked at the U.S. Airway Traffic Control Station in Chicago, at various weather stations in Ohio, and later worked as a laboratory and tissue technician at various hospitals. Christensen continued to be active in aviation, owning her own airplane, a single engine Taylorcraft, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In 1949, she joined the Air Force Reserve with the rank of 1st Lieutenant; she received an honorable discharge with the rank of Captain on November 7, 1963. Christensen died in 1965 but in 1979, under Public Law 95-202, the WASPs received veteran's status.
