Summary:
This collection consists of two items relating to the X-15 Flight Test Program: a 24-page booklet, X-15 Flight Record with Thiokol Liquid Rocket Engines, prepared by the Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Reaction Motors Division, from flight data compiled by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (Third Printing, January 1964); and an event program for the X-15 Flight Test Program Awards Ceremony held at the NASA Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on February 24, 1964.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two items, a 7 x 5 inch booklet and an 8 x 5 inch event program. The 24-page booklet, X-15 Flight Record with Thiokol Liquid Rocket Engines, "prepared by the Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Reaction Motors Division, from flight data compiled by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration" (Third Printing, January 1964, publication number PL 1-64) is designed as a souvenir of the X-15 flight test program. The illustrated booklet contains a brief history of the X-15 program and the three X-15 vehicles built by North American Aviation, Inc. using Thiokol reusable liquid rocket engines; a list of X-15 test pilots; brief information about the Thiokol XLR11 and YLR99 engines; and a chronological list of flight record entries beginning with the first flight on June 8, 1959. Each flight record entry (designed to appear handwritten) lists the date, pilot, speed and altitude reached, and remarks. Flights 1 through 98 (January 8, 1964) are pre-printed, with blank spaces provided "to help you log future successes" (space is provided to record information on 148 flights total). The program is for the X-15 Flight Test Program Awards Ceremony held at the NASA Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on February 24, 1964. This event included the presentation of a NASA Group Achievement Award to the X-15 Flight Test Program team as well as the presentation of individual awards. Featured speakers included Hugh L. Dryden (Deputy Administrator, NASA), Paul F. Bikle (Director, NASA Flight Research Center), and Brigadier General Irving L. Branch (US Air Force, Commander, Air Force Flight Test Center).

Biographical / Historical:
First flown in 1959, the North American X-15 hypersonic research aircraft bridged the gap between human flight in the atmosphere and spaceflight. Three airframes were built by North American Aviation, Inc. for the X-15 program (serial numbers 56-6670, 56-6671, and 56-6672) each using liquid rocket engines built by the Reaction Motors Division of the Thiokol Chemical Corporation. Based at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Flight Research Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, the X-15 was the first winged aircraft to fly Mach 4, 5, and 6 and to operate at altitudes above 30,500 m (100,000 ft). Eight of the twelve test pilots received astronaut wings for X-15 high-altitude flights.

Summary:
This single-item collection consists of a French-language catalogue issued circa 1910 by the Aviation Office (Office d'Aviation) of Richelieu Automobiles in Paris, France. The catalogue consists of loose pages bound together in a decorative cover. Individual pages detail aviation equipment and services offered by Richelieu Automobiles, including airplanes from assorted designers and manufacturers, Astra balloons and airships, engines, aircraft accessories, fabric, hangars, toy airplanes, insurance, flight clothing, and books.
Scope and Contents:
This French language catalogue ("Catalogue B"), issued circa 1910 by the Aviation Office (Office d'Aviation) of Richelieu Automobiles, consists of 46 double-sided black and white printed sheets inserted into a heavy brown paper cover illustrated with a four-color serigraph print, bound with a blue silk cord. The front cover depicts a "Vision of the Future" ("Vision d'Avenir") at top with an eagle in flight at bottom; the back cover features the mythological figure of Daedalus in flight over Paris, with aircraft in the background. The first two sheets provide information about aviation services offered by Richelieu Automobiles, the organization of the catalogue, and include an exterior view of Richelieu's showroom at 3, Avenue de'Opéra, Paris, France. This copy of the catalogue does not include sheets for all sections listed in the introduction (Classes).

Biographical / Historical:
The company known as "Office d'Aviation – Richelieu Automobiles" was established in Paris, France, in June 1909 by Viscount Henry de Dampierre, Jean d'Orlyé, and Belgian aviator Ferdinand de Baeder, to offer customers everything related to airplanes, airships, balloons, engines, and automobiles, including related accessories and services. Their main showroom was located at 3, Avenue de'Opéra, with administrative offices at 42, Rue de Richelieu, and a building at 19, Rue des Entrepreneurs where they offered aircraft construction and repair services as well as aircraft storage at the rate of 10 centimes per square meter per day. The business incorporated as a Sociéte Anonyme on August 10, 1910, only to dissolve just over a year later on September 12, 1911.

A second circa 1910 version of an Office d'Aviation catalogue, identified as NASM Archives item number NASM-9A00722, appears in the John J. Ide Collection, NASM.XXXX.0070. This copy (44 pages total) is made up of many of the same sheets in NASM-9A18906 but includes additional airplane sheets for the Antoinette, Bréguet, Curtiss, Nieuport, de Pischoff (L'Autoplane), Savary, and Tellier companies. This catalogue is also presented in its original order, and contains several duplicate sheets.

Summary:
The Marmon Motor Car Company, owned by Nordyke & Marmon Company of Indianapolis, Indiana, was one of several automotive companies that was awarded contracts to produce Liberty aircraft engines during World War I. Hall-Scott also licensed Nordyke & Marmon to produce some of their aircraft engines. This collection consists of a photo album documenting the construction of Nordyke & Marmon Company's aviation plant, as well as operations at the completed factory. There is also a sheet in the front of the album which lists captions and dates for each photograph contained in the album.

This collection consists of a photo album documenting the construction of Nordyke & Marmon Company's aviation plant, as well as operations at the completed factory. The album, which measures approximately 11 by 8 inches and has a Marmon logo on the front cover, includes many images of men and women at work. The album also includes images of completed Liberty and Hall-Scott engines on test stands. There is also a sheet in the front of the album which lists captions and dates for each photograph contained in the album.

This collection consists of three patents issued to Louis Gathmann.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of three patents issued to Louis Gathmann in Great Britain. The first, number 5,150, was issued on April 13, 1886 for an invention for "improvements in grain driers." The second patent, issued for invention for "improvements in machines for bending or coiling metal bars" is numbered 14,128 and dated October 2, 1888. The third patent, dated March 6, 1904, is numbered 18,560 and was issued for the invention of "improvements in air propellers for flying machines." The collection also contains two 1907 memoranda on applying for patents in Great Britain as well as the top portion of a piece of Gathmann's personal stationery which includes his name and address along with an illustration of his home in Chicago.

Biographical / Historical:
Louis Gathmann was an engineer and inventor who held numerous patents in many different fields. Initially, Gathmann created equipment for screening and sifting wheat and flour and held a number of patents for these devices. In the 1880s, Gathmann built three astronomical observatories in the Chicago area and was working on a new type of telescope lens. His Chicago home also included a domed observatory tower. Gathmann received a patent in the 1890s based on his research in weather modification. Gathmann later became interested in ordnance development and in 1901 invented the Gathmann Gunn, an 18 inch gun to be mounted on ships that was designed to send large charges of high explosives at water level. The gun was tested at the Government Proving Ground at Sandy Hook but was rejected by the U.S. military. In 1916, Gathmann invented a new type of battleship armor based on the use of air chambers and shock absorbers. Gathmann also had an interest in aviation and proposed an idea for a type of helicopter that he called an "Aero Locomotive" in the early 1900s. It is unclear if a patent was ever sought or issued for this invention. In 1904, Gathmann earned a patent in Great Britain for a propeller for flying machines. Gathmann died in June 1917.

his collection consists of photographs, correspondence, brochures and advertisements concerning Brownback Motor Laboratories, Inc. Included here is information on airplane, marine, and automotive motors. Correspondence with and advertisements for the following companies are included: Light Manufacturing and Foundry Company (Tiger Aircraft Engine Division); Auto Engine Works, Inc. (manufacturers of Capitol marine motors); Anzani Aviation Engines; and Hall-Scott Motor Car Company, Inc. Correspondence with Maurice Vasseur, a French motor boat racing champion and manufacturer of airplane propellers is also included in this collection. A Supplementary Instruction Book for the Type A7-a Airplane Engine, an article from Les Ailes May 18, 1946, and the 1938 report of the United States National Museum are included as well. Information on the following engines is included: Hall-Scott A-7-A four cylinder, Tiger, Tiger Junior, Tiger Kitten, Premier Motor, Shark Marine Engines, Lycoming Marine Engines, and six cylinder Aero Motors. Also present in this collection is Brownback's patent application for "Method of Making Bearings, and Product."
Biographical / Historical:
Henry Lowe Brownback, the grandson of T. S. Lowe, was born in June 1891 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. In 1912, he received his pilot's license and later received a Masters degree from Cornell University. He went on to work at various motor and engine companies, and eventually became the vice president of the Brownback Motor Laboratories in Norristown, Pennsylvania. From 1925-1929, Brownback was in France, working with Allessandro Anzani. Throughout his life, Brownback held several different occupations including chief machine gun instructor at Cornell University. He also worked as a consulting engineer. Brownback has designed and built many successful airplane engines, and holds patents for airplane engine bearings.

This collection consists of one technical manual that belonged to Jerome George Langer, Guiberson Radial Diesel Engine Instruction Manual, for Model T-1020 Series 5 engines that were manufactured by the Buda Engine Company. The manual is approximately 120 pages long and is undated.

Biographical / Historical:
Jerome George Langer (1926-1992) was a diesel engine mechanic during World War II. Langer attended diesel mechanic training from November 1943 to May 1944 in Miami, Florida, logging nearly 980 hours of training. After completing the training course, Langer enlisted in the US Navy. After the war, Langer may have worked for the Buda Engine Company, which manufactured Guiberson engines by contract. Also after the war, Langer worked with his father who was the owner and operator of the "Gulf Hotel Corporation" hotel and gas station in Miami Beach, Florida and later opened his own business, Langer's Marine.

This collection consists of a stock certificate, No. 71,050, for 300 francs of the Société des Moteurs Gnome et Rhone, dated May 15, 1941. Attached are 24 coupons.
Biographical / Historical:
Louis Seguin founded the Gnome engine company in 1895. The Gnome firm initially manufactured internal combustion engines for industrial purposes, and later as automobile engines. In 1898, the company merged with the firm of a hardware manufacturer, Maurice Thevenin, and was renamed the Société des Fonderies de Cuivre de Lyon, Macon, et Paris, Thevenin Freres, L. Seguin et Cie. Seguin separated out the engine manufacturing operations from the rest of the company and established the Société Anonyme des Moteurs Gnome in 1905. When automobile engine sales decreased due to the recession of 1907-1908, Gnome began manufacturing engines for other purposes, including aircraft. Gnome displayed its first rotary engine in late 1908 and, by March 1911, had expanded its factory to meet demand for the engine. By late 1913, Gnome was manufacturing engines in England, Russia, and Italy. The Société des Moteurs "Le Rhone" was founded in 1912 by Edouard Martin to produce rotary engines in competition with Gnome. Sensing a dangerous rival, Gnome offered Rhone very good terms to sell and the two companies began operating together under the name Société des Moteurs Gnome et Rhone in June 1914 although legal issues were not concluded officially until early 1915. Rhone engines were especially popular for military aircraft during World War I and were manufactured in Great Britain and the United States. After the War, the Société des Moteurs Gnome et Rhone attempted to diversify by producing different types of engines, automobile parts, an agricultural tractor, motorcycles, woolen textile machinery, sewing machines, and marine equipment. Only motorcycles and aviation engines were successful due to various problems with these plans and the recession of 1920-1921. In 1922, the Seguin family left Société des Moteurs Gnome et Rhone and new management took over. Bankers Henry Bauer and Charles Marchal, along with Paul Louis Weiller, took leadership of the company. The Société des Moteurs Gnome et Rhone, under Weiller's management, remained a top aviation engineer manufacturer until nationalizing under the name of S.N.E.C.M.A in 1945.

Scope and Contents:
This accession consists of forty (40) boxes of technical publications from the United States Navy Naval Air Propulsion Center. The collection consists of mostly AEL/AED Formal Reports. There are also some Letter Report Numbers and miscellaneous files containing reports on Lycoming and Wasp engines.
Biographical / Historical:
The Naval Air Propulsion Center was established by the merger of the Naval Air Turbine Test Station (NATTS) and the Aeronautical Engine Laboratory (AEL). The AEL, established in 1915, was responsible for testing small gas turbine engines, auxiliary power units and engine starters. The NATTS's mission was the testing and evaluation of the turbojet, turboprop, ramjet, and pulsejet engines, accessories and components
