Biographical Note:

Sylvia Fein (1919-2024) was a painter and author in Martinez, California. She was part of the Magic Realist Group of artists that originated at the University of Wisconsin.

Fein was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and from 1938 to 1942 she studied art at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. While there she became friends with fellow artists Marshall Glasier, John Wilde, Dudley Huppler, and Karl Priebe. In 1942 she married William Scheuber and briefly had a factory job in Milwaukee testing switches for naval planes. From 1944 to 1947 Fein lived and traveled throughout Mexico. Much of the work produced during this period was included in a solo exhibition of her paintings at the Perls Galleries in 1946. She and her husband then moved to northern California and had a daughter, Heidi. During the 1950s and 1960s, Fein continued to paint in her home studio.

In 1973 Fein decided to take a break from painting and published two books, Heidi's Horse (1976) and First Drawings: Genesis of Visual Thinking (1993). These works were greatly inspired by her friendship with art educator and researcher, Henry Shaefer-Simmern. In 2003 she resumed painting. She was featured in the group show, "With Friends: Six Magic Realists, 1940-1965" at the University of Wisconsin in 2005 and in a solo retrospective at the Bakersfield Art Museum in 2007. From 1970 to 2000 Fein was also active in the community of Pleasant Hill, California, as a member of several public services commissions.

Correspondence, some illustrated, includes letters and postcards from friends and collegues Marshall Glasier, John and Shirley Wilde, Dudley Huppler, Karl Priebe, Helen Ashman, Lee Hoiby, Klaus Perls, and Henry Shaefer-Simmern among others. Most correspondence in this series is of a personal, rather than professional nature, and the bulk of these letters date from the 1990s-2000s. Of note are almost daily letters in the form of mail art from Fein's husband's oncologist, Randall Oyer. Researchers should note that additional correspondence is included within Series 8: Scrapbooks.

Found here are files maintained by Sylvia Fein for various projects. Files for her two book projects, Heidi's Horse (1976) and First Drawings: Genesis of Visual Thinking (1993), include extensive correspondence, permission requests, photographs of the writing and publication process, film proposals, and press clippings. Materials regarding both books are filed together. Also found are project files for Fein's participation in Pleasant Hill, California, public services. Included are records of her work on the Architectural Review Commission and her 1980 run for city council. Project files for the opening of the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Fron National Historical Park include photographs, correspondence, a biographical statement, and press materials.

This series also includes project files documenting Fein's retrospective "Wondrous Life: Paintings and Drawings by Sylvia Fein," at the Bakersfield Art Museum in 2007. Included are correspondence, exhibition photographs, planning documents, and the exhibition catalogs and announcements.

Scope and Contents:

The Leah Gordon interview notes and research materials measure 0.4 linear feet and date from 1964-1970. The material was created by Gordon as background research for Time Magazine's visual arts coverage between 1964 and 1970. Gordon would interview artists and submit her typewritten notes and summaries to Time's editorial staff for use by the writer of the assigned piece. Notable figures interviewed include Romare Bearden, Marcel Breuer, Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, Barnett Newman, Claes Oldenburg, Nam June Paik, I.M. Pei, Ben Shahn, and Tony Smith, among others. Other files contain interview notes and research regarding coverage of exhibitions and museums, including the "American Primitives" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Edith Halpern's bequest to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, etc. The collection also includes some internal correspondence and clippings of the final stories as they ran in the magazine. Most of the documents are original typescripts, with some photocopies. In these instances, the photocopy is considered to be the only surviving copy of the document.

Biographical / Historical:

Leah Gordon is a writer and researcher in New York, N.Y. Gordon worked as an art researcher and writer for Time Magazine in New York between 1964-1970. Gordon would interview artists and submit her typewritten notes and summaries to Time's editorial staff for use by the writer of the assigned piece.

The papers of Nora Speyer and Sideo Fromboluti measure 2.5 linear feet and date from the early 1940s until the 2010s. The collection documents Speyer's and Fromboluti's lives and works through biographical material, correspondence, writings, sketchbooks, artworks, photographic materials, personal business records, clippings and other printed materials, and audio-visual materials. Also found is biographical mrelating to Speyer's family, including her mother, sculptor Tillie Speyer, her brother James, a prominent museum curator, and her sister Darthea, a prominent gallerist in Paris. Also present are documents relating to the Speyer family's art collections.

Correspondence is primarily between Nora and family, with a smattering of other personal and professional correspondence. Photographic materials document both Speyer and Fromboluti at home and in their studios, while traveling, and with friends and family in New York, Woodstock, and Providence, where the couple were founding members of the Long Point Gallery. Also included are photographs, some in digital format, of their respective artworks and exhibitions. The collection includes one notebook and scattered unpublished writings by Nora and two sketchbooks and an unpublished memoir by Sideo. Printed material consists primarily of invitation cards and catalogues for exhibitions, along with publications about their collection of antiquities and a signed portfolio of prints by various Long Point Gallery artists. A small number of VHS tapes document a lecture by Fromboluti, an interview with fellow Long Point Gallery founder Robert Motherwell, and a Long Point Gallery dinner.

Biographical / Historical:

Nora Speyer (1923- ) and her husband Sideo Fromboluti (1921- ) are painters based in New York, NY and Wellfleet, Massachusetts and two of the founding members of Long Point Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Donated in 2022 by Iona Fromboluti-Wirls, the artists' daughter.

The collection comprises approximately 9,000 black and white 4x5 negatives and a small number of color 4x5 transparencies. Zeidman photographed works of art and exhibitions for the Leo Castelli and Mary Boone Galleries, as well as for numerous other clients in the New York area. Artists represented include Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Sonnier, Bruce Nauman, Susan Rothenberg, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Kosuth, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Richard Artschwager, Robert Therrien, Lawrence Weiner, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Morris, Jan Dibbets, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Louise Nevelson, Alan Saret, Cy Twombly, James Rosenquist, Robert Grosvenor, David Salle, Francesco Clemente, Sandro Chia, Terry Winters, Meyer Vaisman, Peter Schuyff, Miguel Barcelo, William Copley, Donald Lipski, and others. The collection also includes photographs of works on paper by Pierre Matisse commissioned by the Matisse family and scattered photographs of exhibitions in New York City museums.

Dorothy Zeidman is a photographer in New York, NY. Between 1982 and 2003, she photographed works of art and exhibitions for artists and galleries in New York City including the Leo Castelli Gallery and Mary Boone Gallery, as well as for numerous other clients in the New York area.

73 albumen photo prints, some mounted, many signed and numbered in the negative and some with hadwritten penciled identifications, various sizes. A small number are hand-tinted. Images depict Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Japan and China. Subjects include portraits, people in daily activities, street scenes, city views, architecture, fauna and gardens, and landscapes. Photographers include Scowen & Co., Skeen & Co. and Samuel Bourne. Images depict architectural monuments, city and village views, and picturesque landscapes such as the Great Imambara and Mosque in Lucknow, the quadrangle of the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) in Agra, the Memorial Well in Kanpur (Cawnpore), numerous views of villages, bridges and landscapes in Kashmir, and the botanical gardens at Ootacamund (Udagamandalam). There is also one photograph, an unmounted albumen print, signed and numbered in the negative, by John Edward Saché (active 1860-1880), also depicting a landscape in India. Additionally, an ethnographic portrait (unmounted albumen print) of two Sri Lankan indigenous men titled "Veddahs" by Charles T. Scowen is included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical:

British photographer Charles T. Scowen arrived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the early 1870s, where he was first employed as a clerk. By 1876, Scowen had established a studio, Scowen & Co., in Kandy, with a second location appearing in Columbo by the 1890s. There appear to have been several Scowens working in the studios, as Charles T. Scowen returned to England in 1885. C. Scowen was listed as the proprietor until 1891 and M. Scowen was the proprietor when the firm was finally sold in 1893. Images from Scowen & Co. were used to illustrate a number of books about Ceylon and the tea trade.

Skeen & Co. was a commercial photography studio active in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1860-1903. In 1860, William Skeen, who was the official Government Printer, purchased J. Parting's photography studio in Colombo for his son, William Louis Henry Skeen, who had studied at the London School of Photography. In 1891 another Skeen & Co. studio was opened in Kandy. The firm was known for its images of agriculture (particularly tea and spices), industry (the construction of the Ceylon railroads and the Colombo Breakwater), landscapes and ethnic groups.

John Edward Saché (1824-1882) was an American commercial photographer, born in Prussia as Johann Edvart Zachert. He arrived in Calcutta in 1864 and for the next twenty years traveled widely in northern India, photographing major towns and sites. Saché's first professional association was with W. F. Westfield in Calcutta but he would go on to establish other studios, either alone or in partnerships, in Nainital, Bombay, Lucknow and Benares, among other locations.

Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) had already begun to earn recognition for his work in England, having exhibited at the London International Exhibition of 1862, when he decided to give up his position in a bank and depart for India to work as a professional photographer. He arrived in Calcutta early in 1863, initially setting up a partnership with William Howard. They moved up to Simla, where they established a new studio Howard & Bourne, to be joined in 1864 by Charles Shepherd, to form Howard, Bourne & Shepherd. By 1866, after the departure of Howard, it became Bourne & Shepherd, the name under which the firm continues to operate to this day. Although Bourne only spent 6 years in India, his time there was extremely productive. He undertook three major expeditions in the Himalayas, creating an impressive body of work which combined the highest technical quality and a keen artistic eye, while working under difficult physical conditions. Bourne left India for good in 1870, selling his interest in Bourne & Shepherd shortly thereafter and abandoning commercial photography.

Hazel Hannell (1895-2002) was a painter, ceramicist, and activist in Indiana and Chicago, Illinois. Born Mary Hazel Johnson, she married printmaker V.M.S. (Vinol) Hannell. Together, the Hannells were active in the No-Jury exhibitions and the Chicago Society of Artists. The Hannells often worked together making furniture from their own and others' designs. They co-designed the interior of the Victor Vienna Cafe at the Century of Progress Exposition.

Manuscripts, translations, correspondence, notes, maps, drawings, and black and white photographic prints and negatives related to James Marshall Plumer's work with Chinese ceramics, primarily concerning the location and excavation of a Yue ware kiln site.

Yüeh (sometimes Yueh) was the common romanization at the time of creation and is used extensively in this finding aid to reflect its usage in the original materials. Yue is preferred now. All other obsolete romanizations reflect usage in the original materials.

Biographical / Historical:

James Marshall Plumer (1899-1960) , scholar of Asian art. After receiving his B.A. from Harvard, Plumer served as an administrative officer with the Chinese Government Service in Maritime Customs. From 1935 until his death, he taught art history at the University of Michigan while continuing to visit and work in China and Japan. In 1935 and 1937, Plumer discovered ancient kiln sites in the Chinese provinces of Fukien (Fujian) and Chekiang (Zhejiang). He wrote extensively on Chinese ceramics and edited the 'Far Eastern Ceramic Bulletin' from 1950 to 1958.

This collection was created and collected by the late Dr. Marcus Jacobson. It consists of materials relating to contemporary Chinese artist Gu Wenda, whom Dr. Jacobson supported in Gu's early days (mid-1980s) by purchasing works and trying to interest fellow US and Canadian academics (Dr. Jacobson was a well-known neuroscientist) in Gu's works. This collection includes an original catalogue of Gu's first exhibition in North America at York University in Toronto to which Marcus contributed. Along with a few other items of similar nature including: correspondence from Gu to Dr. Jacobson, a letter from Dr. Jacobson to his art colleagues, and 2 photographs of Gu.

This collection is an amalgamation of letters written and recieved by prominent figures in 19th and 20th century American Art. Included in the collection is a significant portion of letters from Abbott Thayer to correspondents from his circle of family, friends and art world figures such as Maria Oakey Dewing and Samuel Coleman.

Beginning in his youth Thomas Brumbaugh collected autographed correspondence. Mr. Brumbaugh's collecting instincts resulted in a unique collaborative collection providing a glimpse into the lives of a variety of 19th and 20th century American artists, such as Abbott Thayer. Brumbaugh was a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and author of many articles on American art and artists.
