Join Julie Nelson Davis and James Ulak, curators of Inventing Utamaro, and Gabe Weisberg, professor of art history at the University of Minnesota, for a discussion about the influence of Japanese art in France. Learn about the art collectors and dealers who drove the explosion of Japonisme in late nineteenth-century Paris. Gabriel P. Weisberg is an art historian specializing in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European art. He co-organized Japonisme: the Japanese Influence on French Art, 1854–1910 for the Cleveland Museum of Art. This 1975 exhibition was the first to examine the cohesive influence of Japanese art on European paintings, prints, and the decorative arts. More recently, he curated the 2005 exhibition The Origins of L’Art Nouveau: The Bing Empire at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Professor Weisberg has received major honors and awards in art history, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a senior fellowship at the National Gallery of Art’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), and the title of regents professor at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum.
