Video Title:
Samuel Colt
Description:
Samuel Colt (1814–1862) patented his namesake revolver in 1836, but his greatest innovation was introducing mass production to the firearms industry. Skilled machinists at Colt’s Hartford armory used a succession of specialized metalworking machines to shape uniform gun components—and turned out 150 firearms per day. Colt’s techniques eventually transferred to several Hartford industries, including bicycles and sewing machines. In the painting, a Colt pistol is lying on the table immediately in front of Samuel Colt. This video is featured in the "Men of Progress" section of the American Enterprise exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. (The video does not include an audio track).
