Video Title:
Suma Qamaña 2014 Bolivian Festival 19: Caporales
Description:
Suma Qamaña celebrates the spirit of "Living Well" in this four day festival hosted by the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, highlighting the indigenous cultures of Bolivia through dance and song. In this segment, Sambos de Corazon USA perform Caporales. This dance represents the mulatto or biracial man who is made "caporal" or foreman by his master and who, as a blasphemy of his race, becomes a brutal executioner in order to control productivity of blacks and slaves. In fact, the dance represents the authority of the caporal over the oppressed slaves and various aspects such as the whip and the dance moves reflect the energy with which they were exploited. Recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on June 8, 2014.
