Description:
The Cherokee National Youth Choir come from Tahlequa, Oklahoma, and was formed in 2000 to help preserve the Cherokee language and have Cherokee youth involved in that goal. The sing gospel and traditional songs in the Cherokee language. This performance includes The Star Spangled Banner sung in both Cherokee and English. Also, the public is invited to sing along on a performance of Happy Birthday in Cherokee for two museum visitors. Many of the songs had been adapted from gospel music of the mid to late 19th century. The final two songs are Precious Memory and Amazing Grace. The choir director is Mary Kay Henderson. This is the second of two performances for the day and it was webcast and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on June 10, 2016.
