Summary: Paper documents are such a common and integral part of our world, that we often take them for granted until faced by their potential destruction. Surprisingly, documents are more at risk of deterioration from everyday neglect than fromn occasional disasters! This video defines some aspects of the value, use, and risks associated with documents found in research, library, archives or private collections. It explains what is needed to rescue documents from loss of informational, evidential, or intrinsic value. It outlines the responsibilities of a comprehensive preservation program including assessment, treatment, collection maintenance, research, environmental control, training and duplication. The various types of document substrates, media, and formats are identified, as are their inherent problems. For instance, deterioration problems arising from paper-making techniques are illustrated, as are deterioration problems from inherent vice, environmental agents, storage, and handling. By the conclusion of the video, viewers should be able to recognize many of the common preservation problems facing documents. Some solutions are presented in this video, which will be followed by a second in the series that will focus on more options for solving the problems identified in this video.
