Video Title:
We Saw It Happen: Glenn Martin (#1)
Description:
Aircraft design visionary Glenn L. Martin interviewed for the documentary, "We Saw It Happen." Martin founded his own aircraft company in 1912, which has over the years amalgamated into the Lockheed Martin company. Martin comments on the post World War I Martin company as an example of the spirit of the aircraft industry at that time. Martin describes his flight exhibition career, and how he alternated selling automobiles with flying. His flight to Catalina Island, California on May 10, 1912 was the first flight of any distance over the Pacific Ocean, and 25 years later he flew a Martin (Glenn L.) Model 130 Clipper from Newport Bay to Catalina. He describes his own aerial bombing experiments against land targets in 1913 at San Diego. In 1921 he was experimenting with bombing naval targets and he also witnessed the Mitchell bombing tests. Credit: National Air and Space Museum (NASM VE 01480), Smithsonian Institution
