Video Title:
James Bogardus
Description:
James Bogardus (1800–1874) was a New York-based inventor and builder who pioneered the use of cast iron as a building material. Skeptics believed cast iron would collapse under its own weight and attract lightning. However, Bogardus’s cast-iron architecture was fire resistant and strong enough to allow for taller buildings with greater interior spans. This video is featured in the "Men of Progress" section of the American Enterprise exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. (The video does not include an audio track).
