Video Title:
Smithsonian Institution Castle: James Renwick
Description:
Architect James Renwick, Jr. was twenty-eight years old when he won the design competition for the Smithsonian Institution Building. Renwick submitted two of the thirteen entries. Not formally trained as an architect, Renwick graduated from Columbia University and worked as an engineer for the Erie railway and as an assistant engineer on the Croton aqueduct before he won a competition in 1843 to design Grace Church in New York City. After his work on the Castle, Renwick went on to design a number of significant buildings, including the original building for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.
