The symposium Mascots, Myths, Monuments, and Memory examines the history of racialized mascots, Civil War monuments, and other contested public symbols and memorials. Ibram X. Kendi is Professor of History and International Relations and Founding Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. His second book, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, won the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Kendi is the youngest author ever winner of that award. This program was webcast and recorded in the Oprah Winfrey Theater or the National Museum of African American History and Culture on March 3, 2018.
