Painted bark cloth designs of the Mbuti Pygmies are fascinating to the Western eye for their apparent artless, effortless, asymmetrical rhythm and beauty. A profusion of geometrical shapes--triangles, parallel lines, rectangles and dots--combined with other abstract forms create compositions which appear at once timeless and modern. Meurant, who a few years ago discovered Kuba textile designs, waxes eloquently on the Mbuti designs.
