The folio plates, issued in 30 parts of 5 plates each, are dated 1845-1848.
This seems to be an intermediate ed. between the first ed. (plates 1845-1848; text 1846-1853), and the first octavo ed. (issued in 31 parts, 1849-1854) under title: The quadrupeds of North America.
"The concluding text volume of the imperial folio [of Viviparous quadrupeds], published in 1854, was also the beginning of the octavo edition, for it contained a supplement which included six hand-colored, octavo size lithographs of animals that had been left out of the imperial folio"--R. Tyler, Audubon's great national work, p. 108.
Vol. 3 has title: The quadrupeds of North America and is dated 1854. Half-title in v. 1 and 3: The quadrupeds of North America.
