There are two copies of this image in this SIA location. Both have different dates on them. Admiral Byrd was awarded the Langley Medal on December 12, 1929, but did not actually receive the Medal until March 27, 1931 (the date of the photograph). Refer to the Smithsonian Annual Reports for 1930 and 1931 for more information.
Summary:
Presentation of the Samuel P. Langley Medal for Aerodromics to Admiral Richard E. Byrd at the Smithsonian Institution on March 27, 1931. Left to Right: Secretary Charles Greeley Abbot, Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, and Admiral Richard E. Byrd. The Langley Medal is in honor of Secretary Langley, third Secretary of the Smithsonian (1887-1906), and pioneer in the field of aerial navigation. Byrd was awarded the medal for his pioneer flights over the North and South Poles, his nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, and for the application of the science of Aerodromics to geographical exploration.
