Summary:
An introductory essay discusses the life of John Gellatly, a wealthy man who enjoyed collecting American and European art. Gellatly was an admirer and patron of many American painters of his time, and his collection includes works by Childe Hassam and Albert P. Ryder. He also admired and collected older works by European masters such as Rubens and Puvis de Chavannes. His collection was formally presented to the Smithsonian in 1929 and the permanent exhibition was opened to the public in 1933. Following the biographical and historical note is a catalog of works in the collection and reproductions of several of the paintings.
