Summary:
The painting illustrates a scene from Washington Irving's "Knickerbocker's History of New York," in which citizens of New Netherlands have gathered at the governor's doorstep to protest a ban on smoking. Men at the front of the group are calmly seated, smoking their pipes, while an agitated governor stands in front of his house, a document in one hand and a stick raised in the other.
