Summary:
Portrait of Thomas Willing seated in an upholstered Philadelphia armchair, beside a neoclassical column and drapery. On the right is a waterscape with a pilot boat and a lighthouse. The scene is the channel between Cape Henlopen in Delaware and Cape May in New Jersey. Willing helped to raise funds for the lighthouse pictured in the background. In his left hand he holds a snuff box with a portrait of George Washington.
