Summary:
This accession consists of sympathy cards and notes following the disintegration of the Space Shuttle Columbia upon its reentry into the atmosphere on February 1, 2003. After the disaster, visitors began leaving these materials, many of which are hand-written and illustrated, at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) in a make-shift memorial. Other materials were sent to NASM by the public, including many schoolchildren, as well as by other organizations and foreign embassies. Materials also include prayer cards, memorial programs, mission patches and stickers, stamps, an original song, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format.
