Summary:
This collection consists of 70 field books created between 1898 and 1904, 42 of which were created by Charles Lawrence Boynton and 28 of which were created by Thomas Grant Harbison. Both men collected plant specimens all over the United States south and southeast including Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Both men's collecting reflect the diversity of the areas in which they collected, but commonly noted genera include crataegus (hawthorns), solidago (goldenrods), panicum, carex, gallium, and several others. Descriptions for specimens are typically brief noting the taxonomic name and locality found. Additional notes on commonality or abundance, measurements, flowers and fruit, soil type, and descriptions of surrounding area are often included. Also included are several books with information related to the estate and its Herbarium, including nursery lists, record of passes, phenology notes, and specimens collected on a trip in the northwestern United States. Materials also include scientific illustrations and a bird feather.
