Summary:
This accession consists of approximately 9,000 email messages of Sheila P. Burke, Under Secretary for American Museums and National Programs, 2000-2004, and Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, 2004-2007. The earlier records document the overall administration of museums and programs devoted to American history, America's social and cultural heritage, and national outreach at the Smithsonian Institution and the later records document the overall administration of operations across the Smithsonian Institution. Topics documented in this accession include personnel, budget, business ventures, the Board of Regents, major contracts, special events, relations with the United States Congress, distinguished visitors, facilities, external affairs, internal communications, development, museum objects, membership programs, and Smithsonian Institution-wide governance and policy. This accession includes only those messages residing in Burke's "Inbox," including email received and sent email that she forwarded to herself or on which she copied herself. This accession does not include email filed into other folders. Burke's email account was not immediately closed upon her departure. All materials are in electronic format.
