Summary:
This accession consists of approximately 2,500 email messages of Ned Rifkin, Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG), 2002-2004, and Under Secretary for Art, 2004-2008. These records document the administration of HMSG and, later, the overall administration of art museums at the Smithsonian Institution. Topics documented in this accession include donor relations, the HMSG Board of Trustees, renovation of the Patent Office Building, facilities, exhibitions, professional activities, special events, distinguished visitors, personnel, and budget. This accession includes only those messages residing in Rifkin's "Inbox," including email received and sent email that he forwarded or copied to himself. The majority of his early email was sent from Lauri James, Assistant to the Director at HMSG. This accession does not include email filed into other folders. Rifkin's email account was opened prior to his official start date and was not immediately closed upon his departure. All materials are in electronic format.
