Robert Sivard's lithograph is of a 19th-century trolley, the Belt Line, which ran from the Capitol to the City Wharves at 7th Street, S.W. in Washington, DC. The original painting was part of his Washington, DC, series, featured in the December 1976 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine. Riding on the trolley are contemporaries of Smithsonian Secretary Spencer F. Baird. From left to right: Gallaudet College co-founder Edward Miner Gallaudet, Secretary of the Interior Carl Shurz, and Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln. This accession consists of a signed and numbered print that was used as the image for the 2003 Smithsonian holiday greeting card.
