The Research Corporation, a foundation granting funds for research in science and technology, has been associated with the Smithsonian since its foundation in 1912 with a gift from Frederick G. Cottrell. Cottrell was a chemist with the United States Bureau of Mines and an inventor of devices related to electrical precipitation of pollutants.
